This may be a dumb question and I may already know the answer but is the SIG 556 just the North American made version of the SA Classic? Also are the SIG 556s available in Canada and if who has them

What he said. Most people who've handled them say that the 556 is inferior in workmanship and accuracy to the Swiss Arms rifles. The 556 takes AR magazines, and is a prohibited firearm in Canada.

But, & I might be wrong but on the SA isnt the upper the registered portion of the rifle? If so the 556 lowers could be imported an mated to a SA upper??

Hence why there have been a few in the EE.....

Problem with the SA is the price....

"The item being sold is a 'lower' with Swiss Arms rifles the 'Upper' is the registered component (gun). Therefore what is being sold is a gun part, not a gun. "

This is from the prohib list:
"The firearms of the designs commonly known as the SG-550 rifle and SG-551 carbine, and any variants or modified versions of them. " And apparently the 556 is a variant of the 550.

The firearm of the design commonly known as the SIG AMT rifle, and any variant or modified version of it.

but isn't Sigarms a division of SA?

my thought was that the SIG 556 was an americanized version of the classic made so that the american public could have access to the swiss product

I saw on a few other boards that the SA product was not available in the USA

Everyone has answered your first questions so I'll address the question of SAN availability in the States. In short, what we've got they can't get. No Black Special, Classic Green, Smurfgewehr or Red Devil for the Yanks. But they can have the crummy 556 all day long.

"Smurfgewehr" ROFLMAO I haven't heard the BlueStar called that before. That is just too funny. Bwahhahahahahahaha. :D

Why anyone would want that fantastic piece of s**t is beyond me. Stop reading filthy gun rags. I would have an extremely difficult time surrendering $400 for the 556. And I'm far from cheap.

Definitely inferior in terms of worksmanship, that much is for sure. The earlier ones had more Swiss made parts in them but I think on the current ones only the barrel comes from Switzerland, if that and I think the springs in the trigger mech come from Germany or Switzerland. But then you get what you pay for, compare the prices.

SIG Arms isn't called that anymore, they changed the name to SIG-Sauer, Inc. All the divisions are owned by a German investment group, i.e. Blaser, Swiss Arms, SIG-Sauer, Inc., J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Hammerli.

Personally I think they would have been much better off just copying the PE90 but instead they decided to do all this "American" stuff to it. Everyone and their mother makes an AR-15, why try and make a classic design more like the AR-15?

Precisely. "It takes AR mags". Well, so does the AR, for half the price. It fails miserably as a clone of the SG 55x guns. Dreadful gun.

Hammerli was sold to Walther.
