Is the Walther WA2000 prohibited?

yes,
but I wouldn't worry about it.
since only 11 ever made it to north america, you'd be paying about 80-120 thousand dollars for one.

Why are you saying it is prohibited?

WA2000 is listed as non-restricted. FRT # 56756-2 in .308, 56756-3 in .300WinMag.

It's not listed as a prohibited weapon or restricted weapon in the criminal code (I've checked :D )

I believe a lot of people think the WA2000 is prohibited because it is a bullpup design. As most of us know there's a little more to it than that. Being bullpup doesn't automatically make it prohibited these days.

Went to see what this was, here is the info, if you want one.

Design

The bullpup design was chosen, because it would allow a standard length (for a sniper rifle) barrel to be used whilst the overall length would be shorter than a conventional rifle.

The .300 Winchester Magnum round was chosen as the primary caliber because of its long range accuracy and its consistency at all ranges. The entire rifle is designed around the barrel. The WA 2000 fires from a closed bolt and uses a bolt with 7 locking lugs. The rifle features a 6 round magazine capacity.

[edit] Variants
Only 176 total rifles were ever produced in three different variants, one chambered for the standard .300 Winchester Magnum round, another chambered for the popular 7.62 x 51 mm NATO round, and the final version for the 7.5mm Swiss round.

The two variants can be differentiated by the type of flash suppressor used: the first, the older model, uses a "can" type flash suppressor; whereas the second and newer model uses the more conventional "flash-hider/compensator" design.

[edit] Production
The rifle was produced from the late 70s though November 1988 when production was ceased due to high production costs. The final retail cost for a base rifle in 1988 was in the range of $9,000 to $12,500.

176 units were produced with only 15 units of the WA 2000 exported to the U.S., 11 of which are owned by Earl J. Sheehan Jr., President of Walther U.S. and due to its rarity it can be worth over $75,000 to $80,000 in the open market.

oh!
I'm sorry.
no i didnt assume because of the bullpup design, I really just thought it was prohib by name.. i remember seeing that somewhere.
but oh well,
thats good news!
im sure ill never see one though haha

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but if you want to see one in action (sort of) check out a sweet Bond movie called "The Living Daylights" he uses one briefly in a sniper scene. Ever since I was a kid watching that movie for the first time I wanted a WA2000 (with the steel tips since KGB agents are known to wear body armour:D). Shame about the price and availability though. One day perhaps!

They are for sale from Earl Sheehan, president of Carl Walther USA. I believe he sells it in the 80K range.

But ask yourself: is it worth it? Twenty years later, there have to be more accurate semi-auto and/or bullpup precision rifles that can outdo it for far less money. It's just a museum piece, IMHO, but nonetheless a cool looking one.

If I could afford it as chump change. Then yup. There aren't very many of them around. They're beautiful, accurate and extremely collectable. Since they never went into service they are extremely rare. Worth 80K no probably not.

The one my buddy owned was the actual rifle used in that movie. Neat toy. - dan
