Is there a reason? (LAR pistol mags)

Hi folks

Is there a reason that I have never come across an LAR pistol mag with the same kind of length as the normal 30 rounders? Considering the layout and manual of arms of an AR Pistol, those should be fine and I would guess the 30 rounders would be the preferred mags in places where standard capacity is allowed. Do these exist? If not, why not?

Is there some legality issue I am not aware of?

I've always wondered the same thing. From a handling perspective, a 10/30 magazine would be great.

ATRS makes the 10/20 magazines, but my understanding is that production is currently on hold.

Because a 30 round magazine is a rifle magazine, and must be pinned to five. The ten rounders were built as pistol magazines and therefore are not rifle magazines and may hold no more than ten rounds. You cannot turn a rifle magazine into a pistol magazine and then change the capacity to ten rounds.

I understand the classification issue, but is it round dependent? That's to say, a 10/20 magazine can be marketed as a pistol magazine, but a 10/30 can't. Or does it ultimately come down to whether or not the magazine has "pistol" stamped on the side?

For example, you can buy PMAG 20s that were intended for a rifle, but you can also buy and ATRS 10/20 pistol magazine that has the same 20 round footprint. What's stopping ATRS from making a 10/30 magazine?

They aren't even making the 10/20 mags anymore. Although they did in fact get them approved as pistol magazines by the RCMP.

And any new LAR-15 magazine needs to be approved (by the RCMP) as a pistol magazine.
Simply writing pistol on the side is not enough. And anything banana shaped is almost guaranteed to be deemed a rifle magazine.

Personally I would really prefer if nobody attempted it. It would likely backfire, and end up like the Beouwulf fiasco.
Please leave well enough alone.

For a pistol mag to be considered a "pistol mag" it has to be specific (unique) to a pistol - the RCMP says "designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic handgun", they've more or less decided that "designed" means a different length than a rifle mag. They regard the 30 round length as a rifle mag. The ATRS mag is not exactly the same length as a 20 - it's close, but not identical

Some advice if you order those extensions from GS Designs;

1) Pay by EMT.
His website's (FRAUD ALERT)/credit-card system is a bit screwy.

2) Be patient with your delivery.
It's a one man business. He doesn't pre-machine or stock anything. It's all made to order.
