I was asked this. Does anyone know if this rifle currently exists in a museum in Winnipeg?

Hi Tom. I'm going to Winnipeg for a visit in August. The only true
Ross sniper's rifle with Win A5 scope used to be in a museum out there.
There's a photo in the Ross Rifle Story attributing the rifle to a nephew of
Louis Riel. I can't find it in any museum website. Have you any idea
where it is?

It should be at the RWR museum at Minto Armouries. I haven't been there in a couple years, but I can't see it leaving. Here is the contact page with emails for the museum: http://royalwinnipegrifles.com/regimental-museum/contact-the-museum/

Still is there. Everytime I go to Minto I usually check it out. Plus there's a couple pictures of my dad from when the Regiment turned 100 in '83 on display

There is an original Ross sniper rifle with a Warner Swasey scope at the 90th Rifles (Black Devils) Museum in the Minto Armouries.

The Ross with the Winchester A5 scope that was used by sniper Paddy Riel unfortunately developed legs quite a while ago.

The one that is there is worth seeing as it came directly from the the front. It was presented to General Lipsett by Sgt. Sniper Frank Iriam after the sniper that used it was killed.

And Gen. Lipsett was the former O.C. of the 8th Battalion who got it's sniping and scouting section going.

Word is the Riel rifle "developed legs" around the time there was a fire and it "got lost". Funnily enough the silver plate that was on the butt survived the fire intact. Wonders never cease. It's in some "private collection" now no doubt, with four little holes in the butt where the silver nails held the plate on.

If you want to know what WWI was like in the Canadian trenches, if you're interested in WWI sniping or Ross rifles you need to read Iriam's book. Put's McBride, Hesketh-Prichard and all the rest in the shade.
