Is there a source for P53 Enfield bullets in Canada?

Hey there.

I'll be getting into casting my own bullets eventually, but I would like to at least grab a handful of premade bullets to get myself started shooting. Getting my Pedersoli P53 later this week but I won't be shooting it for a little while yet. Does anyone know of a source/individual I can contact to get myself stocked up on some for the meantime? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Trouble is that you need a Minié bullet about one or two thou undersized to be effective and easy to thumb down the bore. Only experiment using a few different sizes will tell you which to use. Do you know anyone who shoots one of these rifles? Have you watched capandball on Youtube? He is the Pedersoli importer into Hungary, and is also a national champion rifle and pistol shot with BP. He has a movie on the P53, genuine and Pedersoli reproduction, that might give you some idea. Note that he also uses the spiffy Perdersoli sizer/lubricator device.

I'm hoping, too that my old pal dungspreader will drop by the forum and help you out. He has one, but lives up near Peace River BC.

jets bullets would work great if you put them through a pedersoli .576 sizer. I might half to buy some after I run out of lead.

also you could try hornady .570 round ball with lubed patch for less than 100m shooting

Thanks to everyone for the great replies! I just got my rifle in yesterday.

I've been binge watching Britishmuzzleloaders, CapandBall and FTG's channels for the past while to get myself well introduced to the firearm and loading methods. Just been a matter of getting the actual firing bits in order.

I've gotten in contact with the kind folks at Hillfolk Musket Supply, and they will be helping me with all of the basic shooting supplies for the rifle, and I'll be picking up a good haul of Goex FFG powder shortly. Just a matter of getting the properly sized ammunition and musket caps to get this thing going.

Is there any major difference between a Snider bullet and something made for a muzzleloader? I'll be ordering a pedersoli Sizer and a ball puller from Marstar later today, will definitely have to put an order in for the Jett .578's and see how they like my rifle.

Sniders are P53 that were chopped and converted, they have progressive depth rifling too. Snider bullets are oversize to make a better seal at the breech end of the barrel, since your loading it from the rear instead of the muzzle. I assume you have an non repro? If so the Lee Parker hale 577 mold is a much better option. The Pedesoli and snider bullets/molds probably will shoot better in the standard rifled Pedersoli Enfield.

You can try sizing the jet hollow base 425gr bullets to .576 and see how they fair. Do not use a solid base in a non Snider as is will not seal against the rifling and cause gas erosion or poor accuracy.

Oh make sure you buy RWS musket caps or CCI #11 Mag's (if you have a #11 nipple) Do not waist your time on CCI musket caps.

Also FFFg might be a better powder, but FFg is good too.

I have a Pedersoli P53, so definitely a repro. I had a chance to pick up an original, but the seller wasn't too keen on the idea of me shooting it, so it was likely for the best I never got that particular example.

How do I tell what kind of nipple I have on my rifle? From some of my googling DP P53's I've been getting an even split between #11's and Musket Caps, so i'm assuming they are of similar size?

I see a lot of sources suggesting FFg instead of FFFg. I'm assuming the burn rate would be better on the FFFg powder? Would I have to change the charge weight at all between the powders? I'm looking to start with around 60 grains of whichever powder with my shooting.

I just emailed Jet for an order of those hollow base rounds. Hopefully I'll have my sizers and other tools around the same time I get the rest of my stuff.

Thanks a ton.

All factory Pedersolis have musket cap style nipples, I bought a #11 nipple off Trackofthewolf online. The guy on "Cap and ball" was using 36gr of fffg goex in his D.P. P53 with excellent groups, I would set 60grs as your max load (unless your going to war :p)

I am picking up my caps tomorrow and will be shooting my Pedersoli P53 for the first time this weekend, I will do up a post on it.

Round ball have always shot poorly for me, i shoot 60gr ffg. fffg will work but bang on the shoulder a little harder then need be. Geox works the same as holy black, advantage with geox is by volume it weighs less, so more shots per pound. Casting minies is an art on its own, as they develop void in them when casting and all must be weighed after casting. Expect a high percentage back in the pot. The lee mold drops as 575/4 which gives terriable accracy but can be PP up for snug fit. Anyone in the calgary area id be happy to go shot with and show the tricks i have learned.

Steve Brooks, in Montana, can make you a mould just like the one Rob from British Muzzleloaders uses on his you-tube videos. It's neat in that it can cast either a proper minie or, with a second base plug, a fair replica of the "Pritchett" with shallow base cavity. As designed by Rob it casts a bullet of (if my memory is working) 0.563" diameter which, when patched with appropriate paper, slides down the bore real easily- even after many shots. That was, after all, the entire point of the P53- fast loading but with rifled musket accuracy. The brooks mould is relatively pricey but is made of iron and makes great bullets.
