Is there a "THE" AR-15 out there if not building one?

No need to spend 3k to get a good ar. 1500 to 2000 will get you a top notch rifle. I wouldnt build my first one. Get anything to get you in the game, figure out what you like and you will probably have a few more in ahort order.

I'd agree with this post as well..you can spend a ton of money like I did only to finger out that you like some other aspect of the sport..me for example realized that I'm more into the long range stuff than the ar 15 aspect.get yourself something reliable..try it out and see if you like it..and while you're at the range have a look at what others are shooting and talk to them..most people at the range like to talk as much about their guns as they do shooting them...I started out like you..44 years old, a newly acquired rpal and not a clue...bought a lot of pricey stuff only to finger out that I'm into something else

the answer to this question is:
kac sr15 with an elcan or an acog

i bought a CA as my first AR, then when I was done with going ape sh!t i bought a colt with my refund, but thats only because the kac i was gonna jump on just sold.

Now I own 3 other ARs, i might sell 1 or 2 and buy a sr15 afterall

KAC is the answer IMO.
But don't buy a sweet gun and run ####ty cheap ammo. If that's the plan just buy a norinco and a stack of ammo crates to reach the ceiling.

But every KAC sold should come with a ticket to tour Reed Knights museum.

Some decent enough advice on here.

I'm going all Colt Canada/Diemaco myself, to replace all the ARs we have. As a Canadian I think that's the way to go. I don't mind spending a premium, so keep that in mind.

If your budget is $3000, I would recommend getting a Colt 6920 and spending the rest of your budget on optics/accessories (Mags).

Don't worry too much about the first AR. It won't be your only one...
