The one in my lyman 48th reloading manual uses pounds of powder.

I do not get it. Would not the type of powder affect this greatly?

the powder gas velocity not burn rate is used in the recoil calculation. it is close enough between each powder that a constant number can be used with little change in results.

The easiest way is to just use one of the many recoil calculators available online. Powder charge weight is important, the basic calculation uses half of the powder weight and adds that to the bullet weight. This will give you a number but recoil is very subjective.
