I struggle to imagine that there's a better bayonet deployment system out there then that of the SKS. Is there one?

Even if you find the bayonet too long ,you can grind it down to 5-7 inches and it still would work like it was designed that way.

It locks so quick and solid, incredibly simple design too!

Type 56AK has simpler design.
Only uses a hook to deploy instead of eyelet as on SKS.
However most soldiers prefer their bayo on the hip than attached to the rifle all the time. Reason behind this is when you in the field at least you can use your bayo to open a can, while if its attached to rifle you have no use of it, besides bayonet attacks are quite rare.

Best place to store a bayonet is in a locker back at the unit :p

However, the SKS makes it very hard to misplace the bayonet or not install it the proper way in a conflict where poking at people would be high in the possibilities.

I don’t remember seeing a bayonet lug on the Colt MRR we tried last summer, maybe just "prototype" or we are actually going this way.

I like the design alot. It does add weight, but you won't loose it and it can be quickly deployed in combat when the unfortunate happens and you're out of ammo and staring down death.

Permanently attached to the front of the rifle is the worst place!

Bad for rifle (extra weight on barrel), bad for bayonet (can't use for other tasks), bad for soldier (hand to hand is as likely as bayo charge unless you're Scots).

Good for Officer and Stores, no 'lost' or damaged bayonets to report. Much shiney, very professional looking parade.

The gun was designed when the soviets were doing all kinds of house to house and room to room fighting. Use of blades. Was much more common for them than with any other army. I have read that when fighting room to room, the first soldier in would often carry an axe instead of a gun. The SKS could very well be the first cqb rifle.

Plus your peasant conscripts can’t lose it if it is stuck on the rifle. And it doesn’t affect accuracy, so no biggie. Try shooting an svt with bayonet attached and watch the accuracy plummet. Attach the long bayonet and you may as well go to a slingshot.

They can be used as monopods no problem, especially in loose soil with pike bayonets.
Usefulness may vary.
Friend did use his choina's SKS to roast some souvlakis over a fire once, which was nice.
