...and I'm SERIOUSLY considering hunting with my 7/08 this year!

I have two dedicated moose rigs (M7, .300 SAUM, VXIII 2.5-8X36) and (M700 LSS, .300 UltraMag, Elite 4200 2.5-10X40)....but dammit, this 700 mountain LSS in 7/08 is making me re-think my 0-250yd selection.....?

It just fits so well, and is f-r-e-a-k-i-s-h-l-y accurate shooting 140 ballistic tips......whadaya think? I've always shot the .30 cal heavies for moose (180 & 200 gr. partitions)....does the 140 BT out of this rifle make sense for moose?

It will work no problem and I don't think the moose will know the difference.
I know what you mean. I have a model 700 LSS in 30-06 and love it. 7mm08 will work fine!! Take care! Tikka

Personally the 140 ballistic tip wouldn't be my choice of bullet for moose. The chambering is deffinately adequate, but I think a different style of bullet would be better for the thick heavy frame of a moose. Maybe an accubond or partition, something along those lines.

Not to me. With a heavier TSX, Partition, A-frame, Bonded Bear Claw, etc..., probably.

Personaly I would like a heavier bullet than 140gr in a 7mm-08 but from a quick look in catalogs, the best factory ammo for moose would probably be the Winchester 140gr Fails Safe and Federal 140gr Partition.

Problem is finding factory loadings......not a re-loader (yet) and no time to get good before moose camp. Now....if someone wants to load me some TSX's..........:)

Your best bet is to stick with the .30's that you've got. Sounds like you're shooting good solid bullets out of them, more suited for moose hunting. Unlike the ballistic tips.

Try the Nitrex brand of Ammo. It uses a 145 grain Speer Grand Slam. I watched it anchor a nice bull moose last year and am hoping to get a repeat this year.

No.

Nitrex is no longer made btw

Moose load for 7-08 made by the factory? Federal Premium 140 gr Nosler Partition...

No! The 140 Ballistic Tip IS NOT a moose bullet.

Federal offers the 140 Partition in factory loadings which is more suitable for moose than the Ballistic Tips. If you look around you may find some dealers with old-stock Winchester loadings using the 140 grain Fail-safe.

Federal has a new factory offering for the 7mm-08 a 140 grain Accubond... it has a B/C of .485 and a muzzle velocity of 2800fps a 2438footpounds of energy.

Two .30 cal rifles for moose?

Nothing wrong with that... When I hunted moose my primary was a Browning A-bolt composite stalker in .300 Win Mag with the 26" barrel topped with a B&L Elite 4000 3.5-10x40mm. Handloads were 180 gr softpoints. Back-up rifle was a Winchester Model 70 XTR in .30-06 24" barrel topped with a B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm. Handloads were 165 gr softpoints. Haven't hunted the past few years but still have both rifles... ;)

I have killed enough moose and elk with 140gr bullets out of the various 7mm chamberings to know that with a premium bullet,it works fine. However, the 140gr ballistic tip is not a good moose bullet by any means.

the Ballistic Silvertip is just a Nosler Ballistic Tip with a black coating and silver plastic tip

the Accubond CT with black coating and red tip are a Nosler Accubond, which is a bonded core BT

It's true that a 140 gr bullet will do the trick if you place it well , but for the sake of the moose use a 30 cal. 165 gr and up. The moose will be hit harder and you may not have to walk as far.I use a 30-06 with a 165 gr bullet and I have had great success.

"for the sake of the moose"? Come on.....thats BS. "For the sake of the moose"...why arent you using a 300 RUM shooting at LEAST 200 gr bullets? Sorry, but if ONE more 30/06 guy chimes in I'm gonna puke. The 30/06 is fine, but there are SO MANY carts that would do it better (for the mooses sake, of course)

Now...back ON topic.......7/08 for moose?

My collection of moose rifles starts with a 270 Win BDL 700 S/S and a leupold VXII 4-12x40 A/O which feeds 140g AB's into one hole @ 100 yards..good back up rifle. My next tool is a Rem 7600 30-06 carbine with an Aimpoint 2x reddot and Knoxx NRS AR15 stock. This rifle tosses 180g AB's into sub 2 MOA @ 100 and closer to 1 MOA, and to say its quick is an understatement! Then we go LONG range with the 300 RUM in BDL 700 S/S with a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50 A/O launching a 200g AB @ 3200 FPS, also very accurate. The latest addition is the 375 RUM in BDL 700 S/S topped with a VX II 3-9x40 LR Duplex shooting 260g AB's @ 3000 FPS and depositing over 4000 FT/LBS @ 100 yards.

Its all about shot placement and if you can afford to wait for that perfect shot!

holy 30-06 spazz batman

the 7-08 is fine for moose, with premium controlled expansion bullets and normal ranges of 250 yards and in

the 30-06 *is* a better cartridge for moose than a 7-08, there is no two ways about it. the 300 Ultra is too much of a good thing for 95% of the hunters out there. A 30-06 is a much better choice for the average guy.

anyways, buy some 140 Nosler Partitions for your 7-08 and go shoot a moose, or shut up :p
