Gentlemen,

This Captain has the job of giving a demo to help with the opinion of the "NEW" M1 Garand Rifle. He is hoping that all will go well with the shoot. Also look at the date of this file.

Good one, Clancy!

Clancy,

That's a pretty good letter. I like the bit about the followers. Sounds like he had an embarassing time "last year"...

Cheers,

Apparently the US military didn't want the public to know that there was some selective picking of prime examples for their Smal Arms demonstrations.

Though, why they felt the need to classify that until 1986 seems a bit odd.

The letter dated 1940 was probably due to be de-classified in 1990. Culling the files in 1986 resulted in the letter being released "early". The Garand was only starting to be introduced to units at that time. War was on the horizon, any information about the new semi-auto battle rifle was not to be publicised. Two years later the USMC commenced combat operations in the Pacific, armed with WW1 1903 Springfields(Guadacanal) as they were amoung the last units to be issued Garands.

That is a neat one. I've never fired a garand for 250 continuous rounds, I wonder how badly it smokes? Kind of funny, I can picture some luddite grunts blasting away with thier M1's and saying "I think this here newefangled raifle is burnin!"

Gentlemen,
Claven2 I had to get it Declassified in 1986. What a run around. It's not that it Classified it that the National Archives has some much data that they have not got to it yet. So you hunt it down and go for the request and wait.
Thanks for the comebacks guys
Clancy
