is this muzzle blast/long flame-jet real ?

Look at the picture below. What are they shooting ? Is that long flame jet real or photoshopped into the picture ? I don't know much about black gunpowder guns, but I've seen it fired in darker lighting conditions and did not see any flame jet in the muzzle blast.

Shooting coarse blackpowder loose, without a projectile over it would account for that photo. Re-enactors commonly use blanks.

Without a ball to slow down the gas ejection I have no doubt that the powder at the front of the load would still be burning or just starting to burn as it is shot out the end of the muzzle. Sort of a black powder shotgun where the forward part of the powder is also the shot.

yes they do that when you shoot blanks. I was to chicken to try real ammo in some of my antiques so i did that.

Steve, Ive marched in many reenactments, we point muskets at each other and shoot blanks during skirmishes.

lots of smoke, fire and bang, no one dies,

far more casulties come from the drinking at camp the night before

Looks far worse then it is, its good clean historical fun!
