I'm doing my first build.....I just did a test fit so I'm not sure what I'm running into is normal.

I have my barrel inserted into a Maccabee SLR Upper correctly, when I slide the Geissele barrel nut on and go tighten by hand, it only screws on about 1/4 of the threads before its too tight to go any further by hand, leaving 3/4 of the threads exposed.

Should I need to wrench it that much or should the barrel nut tighten by hand more than that covering most of the thread?

All parts are brand new.....I'm just not sure if is normal? I don't want to force/damage anything if this is already an issue?

Thank you

I believe barrel nuts in general should freely screw completely all the way on the threads, from start to finish... but I have no knowledge on the particular items you mention. Why not contact the maker of the products...?

Does the nut thread on all the way, or the same amount when the barrel is not installed?

It should spin down freely until the shoulder inside the nit contacts the shoulder on the barrel extension. If it doesn’t; something is amiss with the the receiver, barrel or nut.

You need to torque the barrel nut on with a torque wrench, you will not be able to do this by hand. Recommended torque is 35 to 80 foot pounds. I typically torque mine to about 45-50 foot pounds.

Unless of course you’re the Incredible Hulk then you could do it by hand :d

So this is normal to not be able to thread it completly on by hand? It makes sense in a way otherwise whats the point of the barrel wench or torque wrench if I could screw it all the way on by hand. It just seems to only go on by hand about 2 threads worth then I would need to wrench it......

I'll try threading it without the barrel on.....good point, that should tell me if the barrel is causing an issue.

Dont the barrel just slide all the way in?
I dont see how the barrel would make any difference.

You should be able to screw the nut all the way in, I think??

Maybe you have the wrong nut

The nut came with the hanguard, its brand new and from a top manufacturer.

I can see this first/last build not going as planned and with parts not really accessible anymore....lol took a while to find all the right parts and now watch me screw this up before I even start...lol

Additionally there are a lot of great videos on YouTube, if this is your first build do yourself a favour and watch a couple of them if you get stuck.

If the nut wont thread on more than 2 or 3 threads, then something is wrong with either the nut or the receiver.

Screwing the nut on with or without the barrel should be ,basically the same.

I'd try another nut,if that dont screw on,then you have a receiver problem.

Assuming this is a newer Maccabee receiver it would have been cerakoted. Perhaps the cerakote was applied a little too thick on the threads? Plus some of those receivers are machined a little tight here and there to begin with so even if the cerakote was applied correctly it may be just enough extra to make things too tight.

Whatever you do don't force it.

all ready Page 2 and 15 posts above me.

did you use grease on threads ?? or did i miss that

should be able to bottom out threads with hand pressure .... then torque to manufacturers torque #

I have barreled literally dozens of ARs and never had to do anything more than hand thread the barrel nut on until it required the final torquing. If you're having trouble getting it on more than a couple of threads something is definitely not right.
