Is this okay?

So I’ve been sizing some brass, 7.62x54r, assorted brass I’ve shot from my two mosins, both pass a no-go headspace gauge, both have relatively similar bores and slug close.

On about 40/60 brass I sized I got what looked like a sheer mark down towards the head of the brass. The others it just looks like it was tight but it didn’t leave any sort of ridge. Should these be okay or am I doing something wrong? The die is set until it touches the holder plus 1/8-1/4 turn. Lightly lubed.

Does the die close all the way?

Test a couple in your action before you get too far.

I would have no issue using that brass.

Try adjusting the die so it touches, than back it out a half turn. Size some cases and check to see if they chamber ok. If they do, you won't size the brass so much.

Do as Ganderite stated in his posting and raise the die so it no longer "pushes" the brass and cause the slight ridge around the base.

My guess is you have fat cases and a skinny die, meaning the die is not reducing the base diameter and is just pushing the brass. The only problem you could have by raising the die is the case shoulder "might" not be pushed back far enough during sizing.

What brand die are you using, resizing dies can vary in diameter.

That’s my theory as you stated about fat cases and a skinny die. It’s a lee pacesetter set. Going by the numbers, I had three boxes of ammo when they were new, two boxes fired through my M38, one in my hex which Production wise was from a better era of 91/30. Seeing as exactly 20 didn’t have that issue I’m going to write it off as likely my M38 has a little more give and the Hex 91/30 is a little more up to spec.
