some guy on huntontario says he shot a bull moose at over 1000 yrds with a 300mag

what kind of energy are we looking at downrange at 1000yrds
how high would he have to aim? say he zeroed at 200...
who here thinks if this was true, that it was complete bullsh!t luck?

like were talking a heartbeat would move the bullet out by at least 30 feet at 1000......
I don't know where to stand on this, as the guy isn't exactly on the level, and hes been known to spout his mouth off

ive herd of some guys that shot a moose with a 300 win mag at 800 yards.....
there were 3 of them and they both shot 10 times each :shock: ............................
and the energy isnt much but it is enuff to do the job if it is hit in the right spot....

consider this, a .308win will go through 1 3/4 inch thick lumber at 1000 meters. And no, a heartbeat wont move POI by 30 feet at 1000 meters. If the guy uses a canted base like this: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/viewtopic.php?t=102224 then he would have enough elevation in his scope to dial it in, if he says he just held it over, he's a lying piece of sh!t. You need to be prone to make a shot a 1000 yards, with a good pibod too, and with something precise enough.

My first question would be to ask him which rangefinder he was using.It is truly amazing just how much those shot distances shrink when a laser rangefinder is used to verify the shot distances.If he wasn't using a laser rangefinder,ask him how many yards his crosshairs were above the moose when he fired.
 
BS tell him to get a range finder, you would require a 20X or better scope to even define the body @ 1000 yards

this is looking over Randy's shoulder at the 1000 yard range the targets are 8 foot x8 foot boards now you tell me what a brown/black moose would look like down there :wink:

oh and by the way Stubble, its 37" high @ 100 yards to hit somewere on that 8 foot squared board with a 300 mag rifle (handloads) most factory are around 39"


not to many guys I know can judge that kind of trajectory by just doing it , we have special targets for sighting in at the 100 yard so we can actualy hit the 1000 without wasting 3 boxes of ammo :lol:

Exactly my point.If you are using a typical hunting rifle with a 200yard or 300 yard zero,you would need to hold the crosshairs several yards above the moose at 1000 yards.
 
yah the guy is full of ####, he said he put teh cross hairs on the mooses hump, and the bullet hit the moose in the shoulder

I then asked him what he was zeroed at, my guess is he is gonna say 200 yrds.

yes you would an insaine amount of holdover to were I dont beleive the animal would even be in the scope anymore , not to mention that EVEN if they had a 20x scope etc that the power would be jacked up to a point were even a shimmer in a finger would throw that bullet out in the rhubarb :lol:

its amazing how many people say they shot game at 800 or 900 or 1000 yards all right up until you take them to the 1000 yard range and they go OOOOOOHHHHH it wasnt that far away :lol: :lol: :lol:

we did one year put a foam deer archery target at the 1000 yard boards....you couldnt even see it with the necked eye up against the dirt you had to scope it out :D
 
hahahahahahaha he aimed for the hump and hit it in the lungs...a drop of maybe 20 inches tops , at 1000 if he aimed at the hunp the bullet wouldnt have even made it there that I know for a FACT :!:

for the record Stubble, the wife won the hunters class here 3 years ago and holds the womens record @6" we used a 25-06 browning a-bolt hunting rifle with a tasco varmint scope (all the guy had that lent her the rifle) we had to shim the scope 35 thousanths to even get elevation to hit the board shooting 117Gr bullets and my 300WBY BR 17lb rifle was shimmed 26 thousanths on the back to make it reach 35" of elevation @ 100 yards to hit the 1000 board

by the way 1000 yard BR is scored on group size not location on the board , if she had been aiming for a moose his ass would be awfull sore :lol: :lol:
 
I dont think it is necessary to shoot anything at 1000yds ....unless it the General of the enemy army.

Most guys cant tell you the difference between 500yds and 800 yds in the field. But if they make the shot, she's 800yds for sure.... :wink:
 
What a joke... I hear this crap every year over the counter... it gets harder and harder to bite my tongue :roll:
They went easier on that clown than we would have.... :wink:
 
1000 yards, with 300 yard zero?

If he aimed for the top of the hump, the bullet woud have hit the gorund, not the lungs which were 20" below.

Yesterday, my buddy was goign to shoot a small buck. He said "How far?" I said 150 yards. He replied, "No way, it's gotta be 300!"

Afterwards I paced it off and it was 175 paces. 8)

This is how we hear of the 700-1000 yard shots on game! :wink:
