Is this really non-corrosive surplus 7.62x54r?!

I bought some the last time I was in there store. It didn't matter to me, but they said that they did the nail test and it tested non corrosive. Haven't opened the cans yet.

That looks very similar to the cans I got from another vendor here and it indeed was corrosive A members would be very interested in a nail test results if your up to it. I have enough corrosive. Cheers

Only one way to find out, do a nail test. That said, cleaning a rifle is easy to do, especially a bolt action like a mosin-nagant. When in doubt, treat as corrosive and clean accordingly. Hot water is your best friend... :)

It's likely the same batch that Canam had to refund or credit people for when it turned out to be a mixed bag of corrosive and non corrosive, I got some from a guy on the EE locally a few yrs back. The nail test I did was deceiving, some of it seemed non corrosive and some of it was definitely corrosive. It shot well and I just treated it like it was all corrosive, I guess it was a mixed batch of primers that were used.

I don't think I've seen any 54r that came in crates and cans that wasn't corrosive, though I didn't buy any of the stuff westrifle was selling. LVE or something, did it come in a crate?

I have a wooden crate of 2011 manufactured Chinese copper wash. It is definitely not corrosive, even my spent cases that were outside for a month did not corrode.

I had some of that 2011 Chinese stuff as well. Was told it was non-corrosive but was suspicious and did the normal water cleanup. Here in Alberta it's so dry so much of the year I'm not sure a nail test would be immediately conclusive! It certainly was good ammo- much cleaner shooting than some other surplus and accurate in several rifles.

If you want it buy it . if your unsure if it's corrosive than clean your rifle as if you knew it was corrosive. it looks like newer production to me . but it only takes a few minutes to run a kettle of hot water through your bore. I also pour some over my bolt after I take it apart. then I use a little oil .

Well I ordered it, we'll probably test the ammo and let you peeps know if it works out!

Please do. I have a couple of crates coming as well.

I see a lot of people claimed that the 223 and 7.62x39 being sold as non corrosive indicated that wasn't the case. I believe them. It seems some of it actually was loaded with corrosive primers and it turned into a crap shoot as to whether you got those in your crate. Supposedly they couldn't guarantee which lots had corrosive or non corrosive. Some crates may even have had both. I guess I was lucky because I haven't had any of that stuff that's been corrosive yet. That doesn't mean it won't happen.

I'm hoping that whoever purchased this lot of 7.62x54R wasn't duped by whomever they purchased it from.

The price is pretty good considering where ammo prices are today.

Target practice when hunting? Unless I'm worried I bumped my scope and might have buggered my zero, there's no time for target practice at hunt camp...

This. The gang I hunt with is usually up at 4:30 and stays out all day unless we have some gutting and dragging to do. After we get back to the camp it's make dinner, then go to bed to be up at 4:30 the next day.

Sometimes it’s nice to take a part day relax and have a little fun. It is not all about hunting especially when several are hanging. For me it is a vacation from the grind. To each is there own. Some years it is exactly as you described. Nothing hanging then all business! Regards
