Am just leaning about reloading 12ga. and was given a full bag of these empty hulls. Can these be reloaded?? They are Winchester, and say "universal" on them.

Yes they can be reloaded. They are not the best ones to use by any means but good enough for a couple times. The best ones are compression formed..ie remington gun club or the old winchester AA.

Its worth it to start your loading with a good quality hull, even if it takes a while or a few bucks to collect a decent amount of hulls. Often when you start setting and adjusting your press, a few hulls are sacrificed while getting the correct measurements and crimps. Some presses are better than others, but its a pain to have to reset every time you change brands or types of hulls. I think its better to go with something good right from the start.

I personally don't see a huge advantage in loading the 12g for myself, but I found the 20g and .410 can offer better savings for the amounts that I shoot. I keep my eyes open for case lot deals on 12g and pick up a few flats a couple times per year.

Yes, they can be reloaded. I'm with fiddler on the cost savings of day to day loads. The only 12 gauge I reload is 00 buckshot, 000 buckshot, and slugs. I cast the shot and slugs myself so rather than paying sometimes close to $2.00/shot, it's more like $0.20/shot. For target loads, I couldn't be bothered. For the cost of a case of 250 cheap target rounds, life is too short to reload. If the price goes way up, I'm sure I'll reconsider but until then, I'm only loading the heavy stuff myself.

After reading some earlier threads, I do realize that loading 12ga. does not save much coin, but in my case, my buddy and I only had to buy powder. My buddy got a mec loader, a big bag full of wads and hulls, and around 600 primers and a small bag of lead from his dad.

Some of the hulls were old and brittle, so we tossed them, then someone else gave us these hulls last week end so this is why I was asking if they were any good. I guess we will look into getting some better hulls like the ones you guys mentioned.

load 1 to 3 times then toss . they where free . remingtons are great , but not free .hard to find. gun clubs sell in states ,2 to 3 cents each , nitros or sts 4 to 6 cents each ,shipping isnt cheap !!!!old style AAs real hard to find . have couple friends at our club reloading your free style hulls with no problems .you be the judge . have fun shootin.

Those Winchester Universal hulls use the same data as the new "high strength" Win hulls, and have the same basic construction. The main difference is the plastic of the tube is less uniform and crimping can be a challenge, but most will crimp OK until you hit one with a bit thicker/stiffer mouth and then they get frustrating. I did not have much fun loading them with a standard press, but on my Ponsness-Warren 375 with the full support collar they load up with no problems.

When shooting in hinge actions you have no worries... but if shooting in any other actions that you can't see down the barrel be careful. I've heard the base wads have been known to detatch from the hull and enter the barrel... if you don't see it the next shot could be a bad one.

Happened to me with Fed Top Guns.

I was reloading them until I started to see chunks of the fiber base wads detach. Until one decided he wanted to play tag with the wad. Luck would have it that it was at low 8 and it was the last round of the day so I noticed when I got home.

Now they get reloaded 3 times and then hit the can.

Scrounge AA's. Both new and old style call for the same recipes. If you walk the sporting clays at most fields you can get lucky by the rich guy who shot in front of you tossing his.

You got lucky! I'll reload the new Win. AA for my O/U but I only use the old Win. AA or the rem Gun Club for the wife's Rem 1100
