is this worth it?

i had a guy offer me a trade yesterday and i am sitting on the fence about it. here is the deal.

he wants my sig sauer mosquito .22lr pistol, two mags, original case, extra recoil spring.

he wants to give me a remington model 710 in .270win, really nice s&b scope, base rings (all are already mounted on the rifle, one 5 rnd mag and rifle case.

is it worth it? please help. i like my pistol but have been looking for a good medium distance bolt action rilfe and i think this might be a good starting point. any help is greatly appreciated.

He would make that offer if you had a Red Ryder BB gun. Or if you had a Roy Rogers cap gun. Or a Batman water pistol.

yup that is what it said on the side of the scope. he said that when his dad died it (along with a lot of rifles) was willed to him. he bought the rifle and put the scope on it.

I figured it must have been a gift or something. Depending on its condition, it alone may make the trade worthwhile. Definitely figure on ditching the 710, though.

Edit: I reread my post and it sounded a little callous - sorry about the guy's father passing.

The Schmitt Bender scope is worth more than the whole package.

The 710 is not fit for using as a jack handle

looch, didn't sound calous. it is an odd combination. the condition of the scope is that it looks damn near brand new! sight picture is pristinely clear!and except for 2 small almost un-noticeable scratches, it looks like it was taken out of the box yesterday.

why should i ditch the 710? is it not a good rifle?

Do a quick search on Remington 710 or 770 - plenty of reading, but suffice it to say: No - the rifle is not good. Barrel is press-fit into a receiver made of steel tubing. The guts of which are plastic. It will likely leave you high and dry when you need it the most. It is an ugly scab on the face of Remington - shame on them for ever conceiving of it.

Some guys have all the luck. If the scope is in good condition make the trade as others have said & sell the rifle for $200-$300 on EE. With your luck you'll find someone willing to pay twice that much!
Now as for a S&B scope on a Remi 710. Well isn't that like filling up a tank on a car you just totaled?
