Is x15 enough to read mirage?

Do you guys use anything to block the warm/hot barrel 'mirage'?

So, are these competitions shot at known distances? Can you use a laser range finder? If the answer is no to both, an FFP scope is a must.

Or for the financially challenged: A couple velcro squares about one inch long stuck to the top of the barrel. From the countless aluminum blinds laying around, select an attractive strip, cut to length and fit the velcro squares that mate to those stuck on the barrel.

I don't usually shoot my rifle fast enough to make this necessary.
