Twenty-two cases of fast-spreading deer disease confirmed on islands

A fast-spreading virus has killed at least 22 deer on #Vancouver Island and several Gulf Islands since the beginning of the year, according to the #province.

Last fall, the Ministry of #Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development said it was tracking the outbreak of a deer disease after the deaths of about 60 deer on Galiano, Mayne and Parker islands.

As a highly trained beer parlour biologist my first assumption would be that is a result of overpopulation.
 
Oh wonderful. CWD is encroaching in the SE from Montana, and now we've got AHD in the SW. Hopefully it doesn't make the jump from the islands to the mainland, but even on the islands it doesn't sound good.

back when covid started I remember quite a few stories on Global BC about Mink being culled due to covid. There were farms here in bc on the news but I can't remember if a major cull was done or not. There used to be lots of mink around when I was a kid growing up in North Delta due to a mink farm that closed sometime in the 70's. The area was developed into housing and an elementary school (Chalmers) but the proximity to the power line easement and all the bush and forest , the mink survived for many years. Saw a lot less of them by the time i was graduating but by then the power line easement was being developed into Nordel way and all the bush was gone. Still some wild mink around along the fraser river in that same area.

There used to be a big one in the Cold Lake area too. I got the impression that Bridgette Bardot & Company were heavily responsible for its demise 1982ish.

(Also 4 Wing fighter jets probably did not help either)
Judging how deer react to thunder and lightening I guess jets at mach speeds and breaking the sound barrier had to take its toll on these weasels that could not flee from the noise.

There were two mink farms in Chilliwack. On depopulated and the other has been declared clear and are breeding again. The one that has depopulated and has not started up again yet had several employees.
There were about 30 covid tests done on the workers and no one tested positive. In fact according to the owner no one even had antibodies against covid that indicated exposure.

Let’s see if people in the area start being diagnosed with the covered up brain disease out east.
