Israeli 308 Mauser accuracy

Israeli K98 7.62x51 conversions are as good as any other milsurp out there. It all depends on bore and bedding condition. I have two. One looks like it was just FTRed yesterday and has a Czech Rampant Lion Crest on the receiver. All of the furniture and bands are post war replacements. It shoots better than I can. The other was built on an swf45 action and has a laminated stock that actually matches the receiver. The rest is mismatched. There is not a bit of blue left anywhere on any metal. This rifle looks like it has been there and done that but has an almost pristine bore. It also shoots better than I can hold.

A good friend has another that is in about 75% condition inside and out but has seen a lot of rounds down the bore. The throat has been pushed out close to 4cm. Four inch groups are about the best this rifle can do with any ammo.

It's all about condition. Especially the bore. If the bore is worn or the bedding is sloppy very few rifles will shoot well. On the other hand if the bore is VG or better and the throat hasn't been pushed out and the bedding is satisfactory the rifle should shoot better than you can.

Well said Gerald. It always boils down to barrels, bedding and sight condition. Then you need to look at the quality of the ammo being shot as well as shooter skills. If a person has good bench technique and uses quality hand loads, then you really can test the rifle after having eliminated the shooter and the ammo as variables. As the old saying goes about a .308 Win or 7.62, if the rifle doesn't shoot well with IMR4895 then you have a rifle problem.

I had one that was rebuilt from a 1917 Spandau Gew98 action that had a as new Belgian FN stamped .308 barrel on it and it was my most accurate full military Mauser until I got a Swedish M96 6.5x55mm one.

It was just as accurate as a Remington Model 700 .308 that a shooting buddy had bought new in the 1980's and that really pissed him off when we went to the range and my $125 beatup old 1917 Mauser shot just as well (sometime better) than his new $450 Remington.

Mine is a dou 44. Came to me in a parker hale m82 stock with the metal finish in about 60-70%, some pitting below the stock line, some active rust on barrel (right where you would put your hand if you had the butt rested on your boot). Inside the action and bore is pretty close to 100%. I tracked down an Israeli stock with buttplate and bands (still waffenampt marked), a trigger guard/magazine assembly and front sight hood from down south, refinished, and now she's a beat all to hell non matching Israeli :) She shoots as good as I do with the terrible k98 sights. I'm sure if it was scoped it would be much better.

I load 168gr btsp bullets with 38gr of h322. Speed is around 2500ish and is meant to approximate the US 7.62 NATO match round.

According to dad mine will shoot MOA with a scope.

I tried shooting it with irons after I installed some and It was shooting 15" high, since I didnt like the angle locs rings on it and the tasco EXP scope. I ended up since it was already drilled and tapped putting better bases on it to solve the off bore miss drilled bases. Because my eyes are not the best.

Mine shoots 2 moa or better with irons (3 shot groups) and with most surplus ammo. After about 30 rounds the groups gradually get significantly worse --probably d/t fouling and the fact the bbl has had a lot of rounds put thru by previous owner(s).

I wish someone can find another lot of replacement bbls somewhere...
