hmmm never thought of that Reconverting it to 8mm doesnt sound like a bad idea at all LAbeling on Reciever and Stock would be wrong but oh well

A reconstituted military Mauser barrel is undoubtedly the least expensive way to go, and you never know, you might even luck out and find another .308 barrel that's collecting dust in a corner.

I would check it out for 311 bullets and if it doesn't shoot then look at rebarreling. An old fellow i knew used 311 bullets in his 30 cal rifle.

No danger of using 311 bullets. Just start low and work up.

BUT!! the real danger would be the chamber neck. Take an unsized fired case and see if it will hold a 311 bullet. If the bullet drops into the case, you are ok. If it has some resistance and stays in the neck, the chamber neck is too tight and you would be playing with a pipe bomb.

First thing you need to do is slug the bore. Once done, you can consider 31 cal bullets, taking special care that you maintain at least 0.002" neck clearance. That might do it. I can assure you that 8mm bullets are out of the question, but you might be able to go as large as 0.312". Good luck and please slug the bore and report back.
