My first firearm, works really well. Not as problematic as people make it out to be once you figure out what type of ammo it likes to use (HV preferred).
I find that rounds without decent quality brass, exposed lead, or hollow points result in more failures to feed.
Coming in at 900-1000 shots, I got my first fail to fire with a light strike which I find is amazing for a .22 that only takes factory ammo. Never cleaned, never lubed at that!
Not a competition gun by any means so I never use match-grade ammo but have tried pretty much all the HV options available:
Federal Champion LHP
Federal Champion CJHP
CCI Minimag CPRN
CCI Minimag CPHP
Aguila Super Extra CPSP
Aguila Super Extra CPHP
Remington Golden Bullet PLRN
Winchester Super-X CPRN
Winchester White Box JHP
- Absolutely avoid Winchester Whitebox that come in 333 or 555, feeds so poorly I gave the box away. Trouble loading the mag and always jamming in the platform. Super-X was decent though, rare feeding issues and accuracy is OK.
- Remington Golden Bullet runs OK and very hot, better options available.
- Aguila Super Extra CPSP was bad, CPHP is pretty much the cheapest HV you can find and works quite well. Accuracy is poor but it is consistently poor. It also makes a lot of sparks if you like that...
- CCI Minimag, about 50% more expensive than others for plinking and doesn't have the accuracy to back it. Overall a better-than-average ammo that would be even better if it came down in price or shot straight-er. Rare, but occasional feeding hiccups, mostly with the CPHP.
- Federal Champion LHP shoots quite well and is cheap. Lots of lead fouling, but runs very well. CJHP is my new favourite for the price, consistency, and accuracy.
This is basically my beater gun that is fun to rapid fire but also has acceptable levels of barrel accuracy. Looks alright and can be had with light mods. I think the ISSC MK22/GSG-15 Competition version would be the to get if it is still available with the Anschütz tuning and heavy barrel. Would say it would beat the 10/22 for sure, not to mention it can hold over 2x the capacity. 22+1 round STANAG style mags (can force 1 more for 23), nice and beefy construction. Much better than GSG-16 or Derya TM22 mags. Build quality is not too bad on the ISSC MK22 either as it is mostly metal parts, had some bolts loosen on me but easy enough to tighten with some locktite. Includes decent iron sights with a long, full pica top rail for a nice sight radius. Currently making a speedloader for the stick mags to make loading FAST, it is in the works but might turn this hobby-project into a business? LMK if anyone is interested.
Finally, I would definitely recommend this gun to anyone looking for a .22LR plinker or anyone looking to start off with shooting. Overall a good package to learn on which doesn't require heavy investments in terms of maintenance, reliability, cases to fit (not too long, folds), and starting price. Only issue would be takedown is a bit of a pain.
