the other day at the range one of the guys shooting with me had an issue with is AR (was an Armalite, if it matters).
when he would slap a mag in, and pull the charging handle back, it would not feed a round up into the chamber. Now this didn't happen every time, and after playing with the mag (reloading it or whatever) it would work fine.
a few of the mags were a little older, but I gave him one of mine to try (which was brand new, from one of our sponsors - but the same problem occured)

what causes this? He just bought the gun about a month ago and it (looks) to be in great shape?

You should be slapping the bolt release, not pulling the charging handle back. That's the 'proper' way to reload.

What type of ammo were you using? When you say 'it wouldn't feed a round', does it get hung up half way in? Or does the bolt simply 'ride' over the next round?

this was when he would put the first mag in (not after finishing a mag, when all you would do is push the bolt release).
when he would pull back on the charging handle, it simply would not move a round up into the chamber, you could pull they bot back and let it slap forward but it would not feed a round into it. after taking the mag out a few times it did work, and not problems feeding a round when all he had to do was push the bolt release (after finishing a mag before).

also, the mags he was using worked fine every time in mine.

using factory ammo - no reloads.

I would say slap the mag into the weapon and rack the charging handle to the rear. It is the "New Army" way and seems to work fine, gross motor skills and all.

Right.

Falls in line with the tap, rack, bang gross motor skill. Nothing new there. :)

Take a look at the mag catch, the part that clicks into the magazine. Make sure it isn't busted off, or worn. I've seen weird stuff happen before.

If it's not holding the mag in place, it may be slipping and dropping the mag just enough for the carrier to ride over the round. Crappy gun parts or out of spec parts are not unheard of.

Regards.

Jarlath had it right. I just missed his post. Sorry 'bout that. Good one though Jarlath.

Just fyi, I had the same problem with some of my mags , I just took a pair of pliers and GENTLY bent the upper lips like 1/8th an inch and the work great now . Just my 2 cents .

the us army drill had the acronym "sports"
Slap the mag
Pull Open the charging handle
Release the handle
Tap the bolt assist
Squeeze the trigger

They ruled out the mags as he gave his friend one of his new ones to try with the same result.

I wouldn't deform a mag to compensate for the root of the problem, or for any other reason.

I don't know why, but Some Armalites, have a tendency of having the bullets being driven just below the feedramp. Thus pushing the bullet into the casing. I measured my rifle using a caliper and compared to a colt. All measurement were very similar. I never found the source of the problem? Maybe somebody here made extensive research and can tell exactly what the difference is!

One thing is for sure, my Armalite kept doing this. Then i put the same mags into another rifle and they worked fine...

Is that the so called Varmint Load bullet? The ones they used to sell at Walmart?

I've never had a feed related problem with my Armalite. I also have found their mags to be very good and reliable.

I think the problem is that his bolt is forward as he is trying to load the first mag. Lock the bolt open, then insert the mag. Because of the stupid 5 shot law, the mags do not have enough room for the rounds to be pushed into the mag when full, when you insert it into the rifle the mag is not going all the way in. Try locking the bolt back, then inserting the mag then just release the bolt stop and see if it feeds!
