I am having trouble with the mags not dropping free from my Shadow I. (These are OEM CZ mags) They drop free without issue (both loaded and unloaded) when I try them at home but hang up when shooting. I'm wondering if it has anything with the gun being hot at the range during a stage?.....or perhaps having a round chambered? Has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions for a fix?

With the original Shadow you can press the mag release too hard and bind up the mag. You can mod the spring with a little bend to solve the issue. Simple to confirm, try at home and hammer the mag release hard and see if it hangs, go lighter and see if it drops.

Another issue can be that if the mag springs are getting weak or the feed lips spread then the next round could be partially stripped off and hanging up when trying to drop the mag. The best solution for that issue is to get rid of the CZ mags and get some Mec-Gars.

I had the same issue with my SP01 shadow. Plastic Bases. would come slightly loose and mags would stick which sucked for IPSC.

I switched to Tanfo mags and they work flawlessly.

What is happening is that the slide, upon closing and feeding a round, partially drags the next round in the mag slightly forward so that on ejecting the mag,the bullet catches on either the ramp or the frame.I solved this by polishing the slide rail under the slide to reduce friction and also check for burrs at the bottom of the breech face that may be catching on the next round.I also replaced the stock mag springs with the plus 10% stronger Woollf springs which helped as well as the round doesnt move forward with recoil as much during shooting.I found that Tanfoglio mags or mecgar mags didnt have this issue that the stock mags had and generally preffered them anyway.

So, I just went and had a look at the mag release spring. It does not appear to have ever had the bend put in it. However, I wonder if that would do anything. Why are mags repeatedly dropping free here at home (either empty or partially loaded) but not at the range? I've tried them literally dozens of times and can't recreate the issue. The only difference I can see is here at home the gun has not just fired and there is no round in the chamber.

I have 5 OEM CZ mags (3 that came with the gun when I bought it used and 2 that are brand new) and 2 Tanfoglio mags. I think I'm having the same issue with the Tanfoglio's but will try them to confirm next range trip.

Here is a link as to what Im saying in my previous post.Ive had 5 Czs and 3 of them have had that issue that you are having until I did the modification. Its got nothing to do with the mag release spring/lubrication/gun getting hot etc.The clue is that it doesnt happen at home dry firing, but at the range when rounds are shifting with recoil in the magazine and moving forward enough with slide movement to cause the issue of not dropping free when released. As also mentioned, stronger mag springs and if you are a reloader, loading to a shorter LOA will help as well

Thanks, I'll try the polishing....

My 2c. I ROed many CZ shooters and from what I see the problem is with holding the gun on too much of an angle to reload. When you are under pressure at a match you don't notice this and gravity doesn't work as well dropping the mag.

Thanks for the tip sevoman. That seems to have done the trick.

I just got back from the range after doing the polishing and mags are dropping freely. A few drops of Mother's Mag Polish is certainly cheaper than 5 new mags....or even 5 new springs :d
