So... at the range today. I probably fired over 500 22LR from my 10/22. I had no issued with most of the ammo, but I had a few boxes of Winchester Super X 40 GR High Velocity stuff.

I got multiple FTE, FTF, double feeds, etc, etc.

The scariest moment was when a round decided to cook off and spray shrapnel everywhere. Thank god for shooting glasses. It probably happened half a dozen times, all with the same ammo (dumb me decided to keep shooting it to try and figure out what was going on). So here's what I saw... puff of black smoke out the ejection port, smoke out the mag well and bits of brass flying everywhere, including at my face. I didn't find many of the brass, as they were quite literally gone. The one I did find actually ended up stuck in the chamber with no end. Picture a hollow tube of brass. I wish I had a picture, but by the time I removed it, it was pretty crushed/deformed.

It only happened with that ammo, so obviously I won't use it, which is a shame cuz my Mosquito loves it and hates the other stuff.

Can anyone tell me if this is common with certain ammo?

Is this the grey box of Winchester? I seem to be reading a lot about issues with that particular version of Winchester, and the Remington Golden Bullets (or whatever they're called). If you're not having issues with any other ammo, I would just stop using that particular version of Winchester, and stick with what works. A lot of people seem to be having good results with CCI, so that's what I'm going to start with once I pick up my 10/22.

I've seen that grey box stuff too. I noticed(in my box at least) some rounds had lead from the bullet overlapping and interfering with the overall diameter of the case. I had some peters(remington) 22lr rounds and one had part of the rim explode. I was stupid and not wearing safety glasses. Its been 8 trips to the eye clinic so far and all the brass is out. My vision hasn't cleared up and open sights might now be a thi g of the past. I've since bought lots of safety glasses.

Yep, I'm really glad I was wearing glasses. I am still digging brass out of my skin and hair. Quite scary.

I got multiple double feeds and on the rounds I inspected, they seemed to be off centre. The round itself would be tilted on way or another. Not sure if it was pinched, or just loose.

Either way, I won't be buying this stuff again. Kinda sad cuz I got a good deal on 2 boxes of 500 rounds of it and it seems to be the most accurate out of my 22 thus far.
