Issues with measuring OAL

Step 1: Make a dummy round somewhat longer than your longest measurement for 1 specific bullet.
Step 2: Polish the bullet with some 000 Steel wool and chamber the dummy, when you take it out you should see the marks from the lands on the bullet.
Turn in seater stem (depending on how much the bullet jammed) .001-.005, run dummy through seater and repeat step 2.
Keep doing this until you can just barely see the land marks on the bullet and then measure the round with your comparator, mark the bullet and measurement to the lands on the case and keep for future reference.

Do these steps for each bullet you plan on using and keep the dummy rounds in an easy to get to spot.

Here are examples of mine:
I also mark which barrel the dummy is made for since (for my 6BR for instance) I have 2 barrels on 2 different actions in the same chambering. (You can see the 107 Sierra reads Palma above the bullet, this is for the Heavy Palma contour barrel where as the other dummy is for a Straight Blank barrel)
