I really like the blued look on the Ruger GP100 but I think it would look really awesome with a stainless steel cylinder. Anyone know if it's possible to do that or how?

X2 that's all you need to do. You can get a nice high polish or take it in for bead blasting if you want a more satin finish. I'm bringing in a new blued Raging Judge soon from the US as all I have seen here is stainless. Haven't decided yet myself whether to polish the cylinder or have it blasted but gonna do the controls as well either way will have an excellent finished look and really stand out. As of now I'm leaning towards the blasting texture of S&W Perf. Center. It would have the same finished look as the 627 V-Comp two tone you should check that one out if you haven't already. Go for it. Good luck.

Sorry, a few more questions.......A) what is the difference between a stainless finish and a satin stainless finish? B) what is bead blasting and where would I get that done?

Thanks!

There should be at least a few members on here that can give the tech specs on metal finishes but in a nutshell there are a number of options doesn't have to be anything fancy as your not plating anything. The satin texture is just a lower sheen look versus high polish. It's duller and light scratches usually won't show so easily. There are many materials that can be applied to the steel like glass beads or crushed walnut shells for example. I would suggest looking at as many photos online as you can and when you find the finish you like find out what material they used if it was blasted. The process for small gun parts is inexpensive in most cases if you take the parts to them. Where I live I know of a gun friendly jewlery shop that does it or sends stuff out depending on what is required. Also decide if you want any part of the frame done because that will complicate things as you have to find a licsenced shop for restricteds. Or you can just polish yourself using youtube as your guide and spend a few bucks on a bench grinder and polishing wheels. Either way there are lots of options if yoy look around. Try Kijiji in your town look under services and type in polishing or sandblasting and start there.

Stainless steel is simply steel. You treat the surface to give it the look you want. Anything from a mirror shine to a brushed look to a matt grey bead blasted look.

The blueing on your cylinder aids in retaining a film of oil and to some small extent resisting rust since the blueing process is a form of corrosion. If you remove it then you will need to be more attentive to keeping the cylinder oiled. Also carbon steel tends to look slightly more grey than stainless. So it won't quite have that "whiteness" of an actual stainless steel.

The GP100's are mostly available in stainless. So you'd need to find one of the somewhat more rare blued models to do this. Or you could just get a stainless model and send it out to someplace to have it given a black finish. Note that it won't come back with the classic gloss blue style finish. It'll be more of a matt black finish I believe.

It sounds like you want a sort of Ruger "Pinto". This is the term used for two-tone S&Ws with a blued frame and a nickel plated cylinder and barrel.

I would go with the option of Nitron finishing a stainless gun except the cylinder mentioned above.
