Italian Carcano Clips

A friend of mine recently got a Carcano sportered, I think, by Cooey. It is in 6.5x54 Mannlicher and has double set triggers. Basically just an old beater but he claims something is missing from the magazine and he can only fire it in single shot mode. I know next to nothing about Carcanos but aren't they supposed to be operated with a stripper clip and ammo inserted in the magazine and when empty the clip drops out the bottom? If so, will the original clips function as designed with the 6.5 Mannlicher round?
Any input would be appreciated.

They are a little expensive to find by themselves but as long as you find one and take care of it, it will last a long time. I got mine from Ellwood Epps for $7 for my Vetterli-Vitali and it is a 1939 dated one in excellent condition. They may still have some more left so you may wish to check there.

Now, I'm not sure they will work perfectly with another round besides the 6.5x55 Carcano, someone else may be able to shed some light here.

Thanks for the tip and the info. I couldn't see where anything was missing from his rifle just the clip.

If that rifle is a Cooey Carcano, it is NOT chambered for 6.5 Carcano. Rather, it is chambered for the 6.5x53.5 Mannlicher Schoenauer. These rifles were recalled because people tried firing Italian military ammo through them with scary results. If you Google "Cooey Carcano", it will give you a lot more info on these conversions.

Carcano clips

The Carcano uses what is called an en-bloc clip. The rounds are loaded into the clip, and the whole unit is pushed down into the magazine. When the last round is fired, the empty clip is dropped by gravity from the bottom of the magazine.

If you make up a small metal cover plate for the slot in the bottom of the magazine, the clip will stay in the rifle, and not be possibly lost.

I am aware it is a 6.5 Mannlicher, I mentioned it in the original post. I would just like to pick up a couple clips so buddy can use it.
