Does anyone know what the proper bayonet is for an Italian M.1870/87/16 Vetterli Infantry Rifle? I have never seen one or heard of it discussed on the forum. My Vetterli is also WW2 AOI marked if that makes a difference.

I haven't seen the bayonet around but funny how I came across a Vetterli 70/87/16 at a local gunshop. Poor thing needed some real care to be brought back. The most unusual thing I noticed was the bolt sleeve (or equivalent ?) It looked like a fat mini egg and sounded funny too when you cocked and locked down the bolt (like you were winding a spring up). Don't know how safe these rifles are to fire though.

Back to the topic at hand, for a bayonet I would have a look on ebay in addition to posting a WTB here on CGN. Gunboards would be my next choice if the first two fall through.

Happy hunting!

The proper bt is the M1871/16 or 1871/87/16 which is the original with the blade shortened to 362mm and the hook on the cross piece removed.

AOI. I have one f those in a 70/87/915.

Italian East African service (Ethiopia), or so I am told.

First rifle I owned, still have it: the start of my collection. Got it from Hunter's Lodge in the States through Albion in Peterborough, their Canadian depot: $9.95 + 20% extra for Canada made $11.97 total and it was REAL. Learned a lot from that old thing, took YEARS to find some shells!

Fun!

You shot yours?! You're a braver man than I. Mine is an al matching, non refurb (as far as the University of Google has taught me). Everything matches including stock and no X'd out numbers or re stamps. Also, the University of Google taught me that the 6.5mm barrel is silver soldered into the original barrel which has a nasty tendency to fire out of the rifle with the projectile.

Silver solder, if properly done, has a tensile strength of up to 90,000 pounds per square inch. If the liners on these things shot out, then the job was not done right.

I have two of these rifles, keep the loads pretty mild for them. Now I have some proper diameter slugs, they can come to the range again.

All honour to Comrade Hornady, Rescuer of Lost Vetterlis!
