I have a couple of Ithaca 37 shotguns made before and after they made the barrels interchangeable, (about 855000 s/n). I thought I would disassemble and clean them and compare the parts. While they were apart I screwed up and accidentally swapped the bolts between an older and newer one. When I reassembled them I tried a couple of snap caps for a function test. The newer one would not go into battery. It turns out that the older and newer differ in bolt length by about .080” between bolt face and locking surface. One was too tight for headspace and one too loose. I wonder what would have happened if I had fired the loose one, possible hull rupture?
