I know how to take forends off/apart and have the "top hat" shaped tool that fits any slots....but this one is different with the wood extending out locking the end cap in place as seen. So any ideas? thanks!!

Just un-thread it.... if some of the wood grain is hanging out and getting in the way you could trim it back lightly with a sharp razor knife but it will probably just get sheared off when you un-thread the cap and then you can lightly sand the rough spot out after it's apart.

It wont....the wood is holding the cap on.....as shown...

As shown it looks just like mine.....the only thing holding it on is the time it's been since it was last removed.

The wood has the same radius as the inside of the nut....it might look like it's sticking out and blocking it but that would not be too smart of a design!

As shown it's hard to see but it looks like you have some minor wood burrs on the left side as shown but they likely won't be an issue because as it turns it's going away from those burrs and will loosen a bit by the time the other side gets there......but like I suggested you could trim those burrs a bit with a sharp work knife.

I'm not suggesting you amputate the part you think is blocking the cap.....just the small minor burrs along the edge.

It's a bit hard to tell by the photo but those burrs are probably not even an issue as i said before and the cap will trim them off if they are when you unthread it.

I have removed these caps before. I took a pair or channel locks and wrapped the teeth in electrical tape. Just get the jaws locked into that groove and spin it off. It wont hurt the wood as the groove will clear the wood.
