I was looking at a used 12 gauge Ithaca 37 solid rib model with a full choke 30" barrel and was wondering what the difference is between the plain barrel, vent ribbed, and the solid ribbed models. It's a later model with the SN# on the barrel, solid rib, the pistol grip has checkering and a cap, and has a recoil pad.

I had plain barrel 37 when I was a kid and loved it, and have the opportunity to buy a solid ribbed model or a plain barrel model. Any info would be appreciated. John

The solid ribbed models were discontinued quite early by Ithaca in favour of vent ribs. The solid rib guns have a collector following depending upon condition. I would love an old 37R with a solid rib. It adds a little forward weight which the 37 never had. Would be a classic feild gun.

cheers Darryl

It sounds like this might be a 37T (the dedicated "Trap" version they originally produced); the serial number should be on both the barrel AND on the front edge of the receiver if it is.

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards the solid rib 37, plus it is in better condition than the plain barrel. About an 8 out of 10. I'll just have to wait for the weekend now.

Anything special I should look for condition wise? John

I bought the 37R yesterday SN 17722 made in 1946. Here's a few pics of my new baby.

Thanks again guys. Yea, I think I got lucky on this one. Now if it would only stop raining for a day or two so I could take it out and see how it shoots. John
