Have a Ithaca 37 in .12g feather lite made in the 50s.Has been an excellent grouse gun.Oldest boy used it this fall and had a FTF.On exam the bolt moves forward in the receiver but not all the way.The shell had to be removed manually. The shotguns barrel also will no longer lock in place or unlock allowing barrel removal.Have a BPS and really don't relish disassembling this old girl.Does anyone recommend a good gunsmith in MB.Thanks

Thanks Darryl when you inspect the bolt you can see it rides inside a groover in the top of the receiver. This groove also is in the threaded portion of the barrel. They no longer line up.My son said he made a shot no problem but on the subsequent shot the shotgun failed to fire and wouldn't eject the live shell or go completly forward so ejector/extractor.Thanks

Sometimes the yoke ( barrel support) will rotate out of position and prevent the barrel from aligning properly. The ejector on your 37 are the "forks" that rotate down when you open the action. It is unlikely they have failed. Keep up with the info you may not need a smith just yet.

The ejector are definetly functioning as they should the problem seems to be that the bolt cannot go fully forward and lock into the recess in the barrel.....ie the barrel is no longer aligned. My son tryed clearing the problem and noted the firing pin would click etc but because the bolt is not locked in place it won't fire.Unfortunately the barrel won't come off now for diassembly.

Their is a detente on the barrel which acts as a lock? This now however prevnts the barrel from locking into or out of place.Their appears to be no damage?I have tryed putting gentle pressure on this detente while the gun is in a padded vice using a fine cloth covered punch with no results. My experience with the BPS is that these guns though slick action ed are horrible to work on (lot of parts in that closed reciever).Any thoughts?

Do you mean the detent that locks into the dimples on the mag cap? There is no other detent on the 37. A pin (part of the mag cap centre) advances as the cap is screwed out to engage a recess in the barrel hook for lack of a better term. Believe it or not 37s are simple to take apart and put together.

Well that explains things after examine the mark that I thought was a detente. It appears to be a broken piece.Possibly the shotgun was fired with barrel improper locked causing a fracture.Thinking I will need a gunsmith

Sorry to jump in your thread like this, i've got a similar problem with my ithaca 37 featherlight magnum. It came with a 28" magnum barrel that fits properly but I've bought a used 2 3/4 26" improve cyl choke barrel for ducks but when I turn the barrel in the receiver it keeps turning, it doesn't lock in properly... I still shot with this barrel though, I just turned the mag cap until it was tight; although if i forced it the barrel had some wiggle(not sure if i should shoot this anymore).

Thanks for any help,

Harry
