Bought an nice "New Ithaca Field Grade" double, 12 gauge, with original Ithaca recoil pad, ejectors, and single selective trigger. Last two were options at the time it was new in 1927. It will take the place of my Dad's old Tobin 12. Nice old shotgun. It's not perfect, but for its age, it looks pretty good. Crack on each side of tang are repaired. Butt pad is still soft. Ejectors work with authority.

The old thing has been used, no doubt, but cared for. This gun will be my "chicken gun."

More to come

Sounds great. Post some pics if you can

Will try to get some decent pics tomorrow. I had an “HJA” double to replace the old Tobin, but this one will bump the HJA. Interestingly, the HJA has a Greener-like cross bolt. I bought it mostly because the screws weren’t all buggered up from using a $.99 screwdriver on them.

Very very nice. It’s held up incredibly well for pushing 100 years old. Have you shot it?

Thank you!

Not yet. Maybe this afternoon! Yep, the shotgun has faired well for 94 years. My good old Métis friend that I bought it from had it out last year. He said it doesn’t kick too bad.

Sure is clean. I like the dark oiled walnut against the silver receiver and nice blued barrel. And the original recoil pad has surprisingly aged very well too.

A good CGN'r brought to my attention something interesting about the butt pad. He says the "sunburst" type pad was not available until 1932, and wondered about the serial number putting the gun in 1927 production. Of course, there is a wide open window for the butt pad to have been installed on the shotgun after 1932. When I stated that the butt pad was original, I suppose it is safe to say it is an original Ithaca, but not necessarily originally installed in 1927.

Does anyone else have some ideas on this? I am not worried about the actual date of installation, so have at it.

Thanks in advance for any positive input, and thanks to the member who sent me the note. :)

Here is an interesting thread from the Shotgun World website that talks about the Ithaca setting aside blocks of NID serial numbers that were used later that led to low serial numbers being used on guns made up to 9 years later. The lack of cocking indicators which were discontinued in the mid thirties combined with the original looking pad introduced in 1932 would suggest that your's might be one of those completed and sold at a later date than the serial number records indicate. What is your serial number? The only positive way to know would be to get a factory letter.

My serial # is 4500xx.

Very interesting. That would explain (perhaps) the butt pad. I know little about Ithaca doubles, so I appreciate the info. Thank you!
