I just picked up a XL900 in 20 gauge from a friend on the weekend. (28" barrel, full choke)
Friends dad bought it for his sisters to use, and it appears they barely shot it. It is in very good condition, barely any indication of wear.
It was made in Japan, for Ithaca Gun Company (Canada) Ltd.

From what I've been able to find, when SKB went out of business in 2009, they turned all records over to the Japanese gov't.

SKB has no import records from the Ithaca import years 1969 - 1978, so I have only a ballpark guess to start.

My question is:
Has anyone been able to track down years of manufacture for these?

Thanks

Nice find, I recently picked up a 20 with the 26" Imp Cyl barrel that I am looking forward to using this fall for Ruffies. Mine has the adjustable gas port for magnum or light loads which should be used if on yours. I also have a couple of 12s. One I have been shooting for 40 years or so with no issues.

I read somewhere that manufacture dates are not readily available. I can't remember the exact reasoning but IIRC it had to do with the company shutting down and the Japanese government. If you go to the new SKB USA website you will find some parts available for your gun and the catalogs of different offerings over the years. It won't give you an exact date but a rough idea of when your gun was available.

Second question has come up:

How do you take apart the gas system?

Every video talks about stripping the 900 (recoil) version. I haven't found instructions on take down of the gas system.

I could beat it with a hammer until it falls apart, but I'd rather not go that route.

Anyone?

From what I remember when I had mine, just unscrew the end cap on the forearm and remove the forearm and then the barrel should pull out from the receiver. They can be very tight.
