I had a 900 inertia model (not a gas model) and it worked very well on lighter loads. 2.75" chamber and a modified choke, by the time is was done shooting steel through it the vent rib came loose. It was a great upland and target gun.
My brother had a Ithaca 900 (I think) with the inertia action. Nice gun. However, it hated Winchester AA. It wouldnt eject the spent shells. However, every other load it ate with an appetite. Only AAs had any type of problem.
Clearly recall buddy being in a big hurry to dump his (at the time brand
new one) in favour of an 1100. Probably brought on by my laughing at
him (all too often) when we were waterfowling ... I was busy shooting birds, while he was busy clearing jams on his shiney new XL900.
I have an XL900 in 20 gauge and as long as I change the rings when going from 2-3/4" to 3" shells it never has a problem. I have had this gun for forty years and wish all guns would work as good as this one. That is why I still have it and use it every year for rabbits and upland.
