My father gave me his first shotgun that he ever owned. It is a 20 gauge has a gold plated trigger, silver plates on either side of the receiver with engravings.

I don't have a picture right now but i'm looking for any info on the gun anyone can give me.

Oh, and i'm not 100% sure the model is 900 i don't have the gun here with me as i have no safe at my house yet.

XL900's were and are very reliable gas operated semi auto's. The straight 900's were recoil operated and hac some cycling problems with lighter shells. About the only concern is the recoil return spring located in the rear stock --- if it gets rusty from moisture you can experience some ejecting issues which results in the need to replace the spring by removing the butt plate (Sharpes Guns Dunnville, On). I would inspect the spring on yours and if it's ok, apply a light coat of oil. They don't hold great resale value but still are great guns.

thanks for your input i'll be sure to check the spring. other then not cycling light target loads how would this gun work for trap or skeet shooting.

It would be great. Depending on choke, it may be better at one than the other.

And just get a trigger lock, you don't need a safe.

We're waiting for pics.

pic's will be up as soon as i can get over to the old mans and it has a trigger lock on it now but i was under the impression it had to be locked in a secure room or safe. with the trigger lock its ok to put the gun in a case and in the closet?
