I am helping a buddy determine the value of an old trap gun his father owned. It is likely pre-WW II vintage and is well used--no rust or pitting but lots of wear on the blue and checkering. It is a fancier grade--nicely figgured wood, full engraving on the action and gold inlaid birds on each side, vent rib barrel., butt has been cut and pad added and there is an age crack on the butt stock, grip cap not original likely. It is a rather interesting old gun.

Any thoughts on its value or desireability to collectors?

Pics are not available at this time but may be in a week or two.

Thanks 44Bore

44Bore, all Ithaca single barrel trap guns are interesting. They were first produced in 1914 using the Flues action. In 1922 the Knick model was introduced, which continued in production until 1944. These guns had a special serial number range, from 400000 to 402789, and are of particular interest to collectors. The single barrel trap guns continued to be produced up until the early 1980's, I think.

Gold birds on the receiver make it sound like a 5E, but that is strictly just a guess. Wear, modifications and a crack take this gun out of the realm of a true collectors piece, but it will still have value. In the absence of photos, see if you can obtain the serial number, as that will at least help determine the age of the gun. You can look it up here:
