Lapua brass... it's a beautiful thing :D

ReloadsHDR.jpg

Lapua Brass
CCI BR2 Primers
46gr Varget
168gr Hornady A-Max
2.810 OAL

I've loaded up some workup loads (though I probably don't need them) to 46gr and loaded 25rnds at max.

I then loaded up 9rnds for the OCW method of load testing. 3@ 45.4gr 3@ 45.7gr and 3@ 46.0gr

I'm thinking about loading up 20 for the ladder method but we'll see how OCW works first.

my gosh... I think I just experienced one of those awkward moments like back in high school when my 25 year old super model french teacher walked into class wearing a tight fitting sweater...

that looks frikin awesome ! what a cool photo...

BTW your scale zero could be adjusted just a little ;)

Obviously I went to the wrong school. As I recall ours was about 55, 5'1", heavily made-up and pretty well spherical. Elle était très française, mais pas du tout jolie!

Wally, that's almost my pet .308 load; Lapua brass, CCI BR2's, Amax 155's, and 47.0 gr Varget.
I'm thinking of trying the Berger 175gr VLD's, though. If anyone has any opinions on those, I'd love to hear them. (apologies in advance for the thread hi-jack!)

Berger 175gn VLD's are about all I shoot in my .308. Have used them all the way back to 1000 yards.

Current pet load is
Lapua brass
CCI BR2
Varget 45gn
COL 2.975

28 inch bbl
Mvel 2850 fps

So I got out and did some blasting for the first time this year!

I was shooing prone on a wilderness range so I think I did alright. I'm gonna have to go to a proper range and do some testing though.

So the best groups of the day were:

1) .402" 45.7gr varget, 168 A-Max, Lapua brass, CCI BR-2
2) .572" 45.4gr IMR 4895, 168 Hornady HPBT, Rem brass, CCI BR-2
3) .682" 46gr varget, 168 A-Max, Lapua brass, CCI BR-2

All shooting was at 102yds

the other groups weren't so #### hot but I think that can be attributed to a) shooting prone, which I'm not a fan of (though the Tac-pro cheek riser has made a huge difference) and b) I simply need more trigger time
What scope is your rifle wearing?
That's a Falcon Menace 4.5-14x44 FFP

Wally I m curious if you have had a chance yet to re-load that brass. Are the primer pockets still snug? The reason I ask is that your loads sound fairly hot, based on my own loading experiences.

I mostly use Lapua brass, with 45.5 grains of Varget with a Lapua 154 and about 46.3 grains of Varget with a Sierra 155 (#2155), both seated to 2.810"-2.840" territory. The Sierra load is decently hot and quite uniform (thrown powder charges work well at 1000 yards), the Lapua load is medium-hot (I have not yet figured out how to get hot loads with the Lapua 154s to shoot accurately and uniformly).

Nice to see that your ammo is showing good promise (~1/2" groups). Let us know how things develop as you proceed (average group size for a number of groups, muzzle velocity and spread, etc). Have fun!!

Nope, not yet. Figure I might as well mess around with some loads while fire forming the box of 100 I bought before I start reloading it. I'm not seeing any excessive pressure signs. All looks well so far. I won't push it over 46gr of varget behind a 168 though. It's a slightly compressed load and that's exactly how it's listed on the Hodgdon website.

That load does sound a bit hot. I used to shoot 43.8gr Varget behind the 168 SMK which shot great. I usually end up well below max with most of my reloading, probably because when I find the 1st good charge I just tweak it from there. You may have hit that "upper node" though. Just monitor the brass, it will tell you what you need you know.

I am shooting 45 gr of varget behind 168gr Berger BT Match, no signs of a hot load. I went to 45.5 still no signs. My Manual says max load is 46 gr of varget behind the 168 gr.
