I always like these but I know some people don't.

I recently got a new job. I would like to celebrate by purchasing a rifle. My original intention was to purchase something wildly impractical (big bore ruger no 1 or 458 wm), but I have re-evaluated that because of holes in my safe, besides some 45/70 analogue pistol caliber carbines I have a 7.62x39 cz and .338 WM at the moment.

Here are the criteria-

- spending around 1500 dollars
- bolt action
- in a "practical" but not "vanilla" caliber
- not recoil sensitive but something you can "shoot all day" would be nice too.
- the rifle will be scoped with a decent piece of glass (probably a 1.5-5x leupold or similar), this is not included in my cost estimate
- the rifle will be used to hunt moose and black bear primarily and may see some west coast deer hunting
- I am not a long range game sniper. 300 yards would be a long poke for me, 200 is a definite possibility but short range is much more likely.
- something that fills the hole between 7.62x39 and 338 win mag
- relatively cheap to reload for but a bit of investment in brass is fine
- I like heavy bullets
- I like "carbines"
- a "working rifle", nothing heavy or ornate
- amicable to a used rifle

What would you buy? I have an option in mind but why spoil the fun.

I just picked up a Sako Roughtech and very happy with it so far. Mostly posting to see what guys say. I could always use another rifle!

Model 70 featherweight in 280 is what im piecing together for next season, the list of stuff i wanted/need matches yours to a tee. Primarily mule deer, bear, elk and moose in 7a/b, already have the vx3i 3-10 sitting around, now to just pinch a few more pennies for its new home.

A Sako or Tikka 338 Federal meets all that (+/- on the $$)

The other one that comes to mind is the ruger American ranch in 450 Bushmaster. I know it’s not as aesthetically pleasing to most but it does fit all your criteria as well.

Got a Redhawk 44 mag 4.2 plus a sinsinati 13 inch for my pickup and a another S&B scope, big week in spending...

How about a 35 Whelen? Or maybe something in 358 win.

I have always wanted a .358 win in stainless and synthetic with a short barrel, but it seems from the e.e that I am not alone in that regard judging by wtb adds. Could be difficult to find. Going down that rabbit hole I also want to try basically every other medium bore out there.

Congrats man!

Thanks.

I am afraid to buy a 30-06, I might like it too much and ditch all my other guns!

Have wanted to try one of these too, loaded with 175 grain RN's... I played with a 7mm Rem Mag for a while and really liked it but I feel like it does not gain enough over the .270, '06 etc. I might be out to lunch, it seems like a good caliber and I have considered a model 70 EW in that chambering.

13 inch sinsinati

the 20 gauge pump? I impulse bought one of these tonight.

9.3x62. Tradex has a few. Great caliber from what i hear, im just getting mine runnin' . Good working rifles.

c-90..........I think you need a Rem Mod 7 FS in 7-08 or a Ruger RSI in 7-08 or even 308, but you said no vanilla cartridges so scratch the 308. I too love my little 350 RM, but they don't really fall between your existing cartridges. I consider the 350 RM superior in killing ability to the 338 WM. Let me ponder this some more and I'll get back to you..............

Ya know,

Looks like an Enfield Jungle Carbine in the ol’ 303br would be a requirement list filler.

Well my suggestion was going to be a Ruger RSM in 375 H&H Mag, till I read the .338 maximum. Still gunna suggest it thought haha .375 Bullets are not that expensive, brass is readily available. Hint hint haha. But if .338 is the cap and You want a bolt gun, Id go with a nice Winchester in 338 Win Mag. Still the 375 H&H is hard to over look IMHO.
