It's been a while since we talked about shotguns and bears, so...

In BC it is illegal to hunt with a shotgun with more than 2 rd capacity. If you are not hunting, there is no issue
 
I just got a Fabarm SDASS tactical as a purely camping/fishing bear defence gun, ain't no way i'm plugging my barrel.

Buddy of mine shot a black bear 6 times (on a hunt) and it's still alive. So I'm not taking any chances.

As for the capacity limit, what if you were using a shotgun that's got a clip? like the valtro? does the limit still apply?

Are you sure about the two round capacity?The law states that 1 in the chamber and two in the magazine is the maximum for waterfowl hunting,thus requiring as plugged magazine.Nowhere however,have I seen such a restriction for hunting big game.I've searched the regulations from cover to cover and can't find anything.None of my friends know anything about it either.Have we been missing something for all these years?

-It is unlawful to hunt with a set gun,or to hunt wildlife with a pump,repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable of holding more than two shells.

I'm pretty sure it used to specify waterfowl, not sure when it changed.
 
Very interesting. So how would you prove that you "weren't hunting" with a dead bear in your campsite..?
Just playing the devil's advocate here....I wouldn't give a rat's ass about "regulations" if I manage to save my life (or somebody else's) by dropping a bear that's about to eat me.
 
Okay,I see the part now referring to everything,but we're still dealing with a three shot capacity,right?1 in the chamber and two in the magazine.

well i'm sure that the officer will take note that you didn't drag it into the campsite. plus using your campsite as the bait/lure isn't a sound hunting practice.

load up you shottie. don't worry about the capacity limit. most people don't hunt with hip-waders on ;)

If you are not hunting, you need no plug. If the bear is found dead IN your campsite, then to me (being the sharp investigator I am), that would seem to indicate that you were defending yourself. (Unless the drag marks are like, 200 metres long, right?)

At any rate, personally, I'd pack yer Jungle Carbeen instead... One heck of a lot more accurate AND powerful than 12 ga slugs, in my humble opinion.

That said, I've never shot a bear. I have seen 3" slug loads fail to penetrate more than 15mm into wet clay, however, and that certainly changed my mind about what I like to have at hand for things that go bump with four legs...

I agree.I've shot lots of bears and would choose a rifle hands down.We've had to shoot the odd Black Bear in camp before(all legally tagged by the way!) and the performance of slugs has been dismal to say the least.Any rifle from a .243 and up is going to do a better job.

while we're on the topic...

A female friend of mine is into fishing, camping, etc and wants to pack a bear gun but the 12 gauge is a little too much recoil for her. All I've ever used as a bear gun is my 1300 and all I've really ever heard is that 12 gauge is the minimum, etc. I've done some research but couldn't really find anything on the lighter gauges and bears. What says you CGN folk on a 20 ga pump with buck and slugs for my friend. It will be a little more manageable for her but will it be enough bang for the bear? I'd be interested in any experiences or thoughts on this. Thanks.

what i would do it stick witha remington 870 its a heavy then the win 1300 thats will help with the recoil
Get the barrle magna ported. as well as a knoxx m4 compstock. Thats the one with the pistol grip, it will help her hold onto the guy easyer and take out a bunch of the recoil.

2 slugs to break shoulders or just plug em in the head

last one 7 1/2's to blind em and get away if no other options

nothing wrong with having a side saddle full of ammo either
