Ive got 3 questions regarding my chinese sks rifle

1. How long can i expect the rifle to last putting corrosive rounds through it? This is assuming i clean it after every session.

2. What components commonly go first?

3. The finish on my riffle is poor. What is the best way to go about refinishing the stock ie. proceedures and products?
 
1) It will probably chug along with your grandkids behind the trigger, as long as you clean it properly.

2) ?? Never seen an SKS die yet unless abused

3) The origional stocks can be sanded and stained or varnished, but why bother? It's a work horse gun.
 
my sks is pretty ole, i am like the 4th+ owner i would imagine. i shoot what ever i can find for ammo. i clean it religously after every session. never had one problem with it, nothing broken nothing worn out. as long as the ammo is capable of shooting it will shoot the stuff. god i love that thing :twisted: :twisted:
 
Thanks, thats good to know. i was a little unsure of the rifles ruggedness due to its cheap price tag.

What kind of stain can i use? Will regular wood furniture stain work? do i have to finish it with anything else after i stain it?

Some of the wood feels kind of gummy with the laquer sanded off. I'd think about a shelac coat or three to seal it after staining
 
I took all the finish off mine with Circa 1850 stripper and then used 4 coats of Tung Oil followed by beeswax/oil furniture finish....quick and easy and looks really nice.

They are cheap only because China made many millions of them and they are now obsolete as military arms there and almost everywhere else. Selling them brings in hard currency.

For instance, it's estimated that over 1 million were sold in the US alone.

They are no less effective, reliable or accurate than those models made by the USSR, E. Germany, Yugoslavia etc.
 
Just refinished the stock on my norc today. Sanded of that god awful yellow crap they call a finish and smoothed all those splintered surfaces. I finished up with six coats of danish oil alternating with wet sanding with 600 grit sandpaper and now have a baby ass smooth stock with a beautiful satin finish that can easlily be redone any time it gets dull.


By the way does anyone know what they finish the stocks with. At first I though it was just the cosmo they dipped it in but It seems more of a wax. Whatever it is it's just disgusting!
