Hey all. I’ve got an old Iver Johnson double barrel I got from a buddy who inherited it from his father who’s passed. Now, I’m a hobbyist who dabbles in restoring guns and he gave it to me to take a look at. Upon opening it up, I realized how over my head I am. It’s a box lock (which im not familiar with to begin with) with Hercules on the side. Made in cobourg. If anyone has any idea on how to disassemble/reassemble this thing you’d be a life saver.

Hello, there are many vids on boxlock disassembly but you are going to learn as you go. Not sure I would tear it down if it currently functions. You can inspect firing pins, barrel join, lock up and "on face"" issues, stock without doing more than the basic disassembly. Have fun, Gary

These are great old shotguns that will soon be about 100 years old. I have several that I inherited from an uncle who died in WW2 and I still use them occasionally. Other than removing the forearms and barrels for cleaning and lubrication I wouldn't take them apart any further myself.

I would do a basic function check before deciding what to do with the gun.

1) Is it tight on face?
2) Is there tension in the locking mechanism?
3) Does it fire?
