i want to find out the age and value of an old iver johnson break open shot gun that was handed down from a grandfather. is there a web site to get ball park figures or advice on how to age this firearm. would i be better served to find a local shop?

Iver johnsons are little tricky to age. The best you can do is narrow it down to a time period, for example my iver johnson 16ga was made between 1909-1919 based on the fact that there are no letters in the SN. But thats as close as I can age it.

What model is your gun. Single/double barrel? What guage? Serial number?

A hundred (give or take) years later it still does the job!

If theres no letters yours is from the same time period as mine. I think that's the only pic I've got of mine, it's really not that good looking, the blueing is all gone, it's just brown, theres a few ugly spots on the barrel where it rusted at some point, theres a chunk missing from the forestock, some idiot decided it need swivel studs as put them in all crooked.

But it sure point nice, and the trigger feels great.

You're gun is probably worth somewhere from $50-$150 depending on condition, but seeing as it was you're grandfathers, just hang on to it and go shoot some grouse.

cool, thanks for all the help and info. mine is in good condition as it sat in a closet for a great number of years. i think i will dust it off and make use of its intended purpose.

Personally I think the old Iver Johnson Champions are THE best of the old economy singles. They are well balanced, light and fit great. No great value in monetary terms unless you've got one in mint condition. I've seen a couple go for $300 in that shape but mostly they are $100 gun if they are still tight. At least yours is a 12 gauge and you don't have to worry about short chambers in 16 gauge. Enjoy it!

some of the double guns are worth around three hundred dollars but the single barrel guns have little value as i bought three of them for twenty dollars from a dealer and two were in working condition . there are some variations in them as one of them had an odd take down and parts were not interchangeable if my memory serves me correctly.i stripped them for parts to repair a gun that belonged to my father and i still have some parts i would be willing to share with you if you need some . enjoy the old gun as i enjoy mine as it was the first shotgun i ever used .
