I was just wondering if anybody here knows anything about a Champion single shot 12 ga. made by Iver Johnson's Arms and Cycle Works. This one is stamped Canada LTD-Montreal MADE IN COBOURG. The serial # is stamped just behind the trigger guard and the first 4 #'s line up and the 5th is just a bit higher than the 4 first #'s. On the top of the barrel it is stamped -12 GAUGE-CHOKE BORE- and also BARREL AND LUG FORGED IN ONE .
Is it ok to shoot modern shells, I think some of these guns, if old enough were just meant for black powder. It has a few nicks in the stock but no cracks and is complete except for the bead sight on the barrel is missing :(
Just curious if anyone knows these guns and does anyone else have something similar.

Like Mount Sweetness says, perfectly safe with 2 3/4 inch loads. Personally I would stay with the low brass loads, stiffer loads tend to pound the shooter pretty and will shoot the old action loose in short order. IMO the old Iver Johnson singles are the best of the old economy single shots, certainly fit well when shouldered.

Bought one not too long ago, took it to the range and fire away with a 2.75 target load. It was my first try, and it worked fine. It's the exact same model you've described. Threw one of those cheap Canadian Tire rubber recoil pads on as the previouse recoil pad on mine resembled cracking tree bark. Great beater shotgun.

I chuckled when I read the cycle works part as I imagined someone trying to use one while riding a shotgun.

Thanks everyone, I did find a site that is free, they just want you to rate the volunteer after you get your answer. I found out it is a model 36 made between 1909 and 1957.
The site is called AllExperts, they can answer questions on all different categories on most every subject.... enjoy
