IVI is canadian military ammo? Other than .223 calibre is it offered in .308? This is FMJ ammo correct? Thanks for any help,

If you have any IVI marked ammo, more likely than not you have stolen property.

There should be 5.56mm and 7.62mm marked IVI. Might be .50BMG as well.

I'm reading up on the history of GD ... IVI and CAL were 2 Canadian companies that made/make military ammo and bought out by General Dynamics?(private not gov't ammo makers) ... who said anything about stolen property Bryce?

I have seen and used IVI .303 and just surfing the GD site now ... what is 12.7 ammo??? I have been out with the rangers as well and seen them shoot .223/5.56, 9mm handguns and larger calibre guns. I'm surprised that the military goes thru the hassle of collecting all it's spent brass when doing exercises here in the north ... wish they'd just say take it ... HAHA ;)

"...what is 12.7 ammo..." That'd be the metric designation for .50 cal BMG ammo.
"...should be 5.56mm and 7.62mm marked IVI..." And .303 British. IVI is Valcartier Industries. IVI is a Crown Corporation that came from the old Dominion Arsenals. IVI made all CF ammo for years. They also made civilian ammo sold under the Imperial brand name. Good brass, reliable ammo, but not particularly accurate.
"...CAL..." That'd be Canadian Arsenals Ltd. They made the No. 4 Rifles and all the CF C1A1's and C2's, et al, at their Longbranch Plant in what is now Mississauga, Ontario. Closed by Trudeau in 1975. Almost before the tooling cooled when the C1A1 production run was finished.
"...surprised that the military goes thru the hassle of collecting..." It's sold for scrap and an inventory control thing. Not to mention environmental. CF troopies are not allowed to take any brass(or live ammo) off a CF range. If a troopie does so, it's a chargeable offense.
The CF has never released any IVI ammo for civilian sale. However, the Prison system also used it and did. Not recently though.
Milsurp rifle and pistol ammo is always FMJ.

I have a kilograms of IVI in 762x51....It was/is aquired through legitimate avenues...It was 'issue' back in the days when the (civvie organization) BCRA would issue ammo for competitions.......

Despite the 'allure' of mil ammo (cdn) an accurate analogy of IVI would mean 'I'mpact 'V'aries 'I'mmensely:p

A defective lot of .223 IVI FMJ ammo was sold on the US Market about 10 years ago I remember seeing it advertised in the US Shotguns News paper.

Well, it was obtained under figures-don't-lie but-liars-can-figure premises. The rifle association declared that it had expended the requisite 80% (or whatever) of ammunition drawn. What you have is from that 20%. The ammo allotment was cancelled in the early '90's in one of the many spasms of budget cuts in the last recession.

FWIW, some shooters like IVI and DA brass for their reloads. Maybe it is harder and longer lived than commercial brass?

A previous discussion in which someone asserted that any IVI found on the civillian market had to be stolen ended up with someone posting a link to a government website where they posted records of bids on selling lots of surplus IVI ammunition. So it would appear the government did unload some it and therefore it is not necessarily stolen.

Police departments used to be able to buy IVI ammo - hence some small number of IVI ammo entered into the civie market. Howevder, IVI wanted a lot of money for their ammo so people ended up buying the cheaper US stuff. In the past, you could find it at some gunshops once awhile, not all the time, but it did happen. Plus, provincial rifle association used to give away IVI ammo - like 50 rounds a year.

I'm using IVI 7.62 brass in my reloads for my M14S.

I'm not sure where the previous owner got the brass but I sure would like to get some more. Commercial brass doesn't last half as long as the IVI stuff. They also don't seem to get as beat up after firing as well.

I was at the pit lastweekend where we shoot & I picked up about 75 MTs of IVI 308.I also have in my collection 3 boxes of IVI in 303.DAN>>>

I'm pretty sure there is a ton of IVI brass in 7.62, 5.56, and 9mm in various shooting pits within a 50km radius of any CF Army base... Petawawa especially... don't ask how I know. :D

If the IVI comes in 7.62 what grain is it? 147gr? I'd love to get my hands on some if it lasts longer for re-loading?! :D

"...303 reloadable?..." Yep.
"...If the IVI comes in 7.62 what grain is it? 147gr?..." It's not an 'if' thing. IVI made all the CF 7.62NATO ammo used from the late 60's on. It was NATO spec with the 147 grain bullet.
For reloading, if you can find any IVI brass in quantity, it has the same issues as an other milsurp brass. Crimped in primers(not really a big deal. Removing the crimp is a one time nuisance that's easy to do) and it's a bit thicker than commercial brass so you have to reduce the charge by 10%. That's not a big deal either. In any case, case life, no matter who made it, depends entirely on the load. Hot loads reduce case life. Some semi-auto rifles are hard on brass too.
