Hey Guys;

I have about 50 rounds of IVI 7.62 Nato Ball ammo, manufacture years between 1968 and 1978, and I'm wondering IF it's corrosive??? I plan on using it in my M14, but only if it's not corrosive... Had enough "fun" with corrosive and the headaches it caused me because I was told it was NOT corrosive...:mad:

Thanks and Cheers
Jay

It's not corrosive. I finished off two crates of 66 dated stuff recently, needless to say I won't have to buy 7.62 brass anytime soon!

just don't try to reload it or it'll get stuck in your dies and pull the rim off- and no, it's not corrosive- and it's boxer primed and crimped in primer

I had no problem de-capping with a Lee de-capper and I did about 1500 of them over time. Used an RCBS swaging tool on the pockets.

it's not the decapping, it's getting it out of the friggin full length die- and i lubed it real well too- pulled the rim right off the case and i was using the proper shellholder and a good die set- i finally got it out with a priming rod and a hammer

It's not the IVI case's fault. Try using a better case lube. I use the Hornady case lube paste myself and have never had a stuck IVI yet (RCBS die). I must have resized about 2000 of them by now. Be aware though, that once-fired IVI 7.62X51 cases have usually been fired from a C6 LMG and have expanded more than when fired from a bolt gun :cool:

I have no problem resizing either, just use good lube and lube the necks with a neck brush and you are good to go,
then swedge the primer pockets.

Make sure you drop your powder load about a grain because the case volume is down due to the heavy weight of this brass.
Very durable though.

i was using hornady one shot and these were once fired through my own rifle- a m14 h&r- anyway, i'm not going down that road again

Good ammo, clean, and accurate too!

I would say reliable, yes, clean, not really, accurate? compared to what?

In the 70's IVI was notorious for poor accuracy. OK for the intended purpose of shooting through military firearms but not very good for target rifles. 2 1/2 to 3 MOA was a good lot for 7.62.

At one time I pulled a bunch of bullets from some IVI to make some Mexican Match(re-throw powder, insert match bullet). The powder in about 95% of them was extruded powder, the other 5% was ball powder. These were mixed into the same lot # , same case, same box, same 5 round clip.:eek:

When the DCRA switched over from issued IVI to handloads, the targets had to be reduced and a "V" Bull, was introduced.

The 9mm IVI ammo from the late 70's was so poor that it would not cycle the SMG's about half the time. Of course the SMG fired from an open bolt, so if it did not blow back hard enough, the sear could not engage the bolt. This would result in a 3-4 round burst, instead of a single shot:D
