I'm considering once cash flow gets better to join up most likely with IDPA, but possibly IPSC (or both), and wondering for purchasing a holster would using a IWB holster hinder me much in either of these shooting games?

I would like to get an IWB holster in case our country ever changes their silly laws for conceal carry.. (wishful thinking I know, but still) or when in conceal carry states in the US.

I'm doubting I can buy one holster that would be excellent for competition and for conceal carry all in one.. but maybe I'm wrong.. Could I?

You're allowed to use an IWB holster, but you will be putting yourself at a competitive disadvantage. The most competitive holster that would be legal for both IDPA and IPSC will be made of Kydex and will be outside the waistband. There are many holsters that could do an excellent job at both IDPA/IPSC competition and concealed carry; use of a covering garment is all that will be required.

Look at Comp-Tac.

N.B.: Read the rules (IDPA, IPSC) before you buy, to be certain that the holster, pouches, and belt are legal.

Holsters are cheap. Get the rigs you need to do well in the competition scenes of your choice. IPSC pretty much requires the stiff two piece belt due to nature of the offset holster and mag holders. Such a "rig" will run about $300 to $400 depending on your choices. IDPA requires tighter into the body holster and pouches but being OWB still provides a little extra ease of getting to the gun and mags. An IDPA setup will run you around $80 to $200 depending on your choices for holster, pouches and belt. Meanwhile an IWB basic holster can be gotten for around $20. So it's hardly a big financial hardship to get it separately.

And yes, it IS a big difference at getting a grip on the gun with the different styles. I'm shooting both IPSC and IDPA now and it takes a noticably longer time to be sure I've got my grip on the IDPA OWB holster I'm using due to the way it hugs my body.

Having said this if by some chance you do get all your permits and ducks lined up to CCW while south of the border then I suggest practicing in IDPA with your IWB holster would be a good idea. Just be prepared for your times to go up a touch due to the extra care needed on the draw. Also read your rule books before you buy. No small of the back or cross draw holsters are allowed in IDPA.

As Wendell said, you won't be as competitive with an IWB holster, its just too slow.

I have though seen some people compete with them and do quite well...but the draw time is noticeable slower.

Have you seen this?...lol

Got a Bladetech IWB. Draw is a touch slower by about 0.25 of a sec for me.

+1, I have one for my Sig 226, works great. In my experience with holsters & speed, IWB > Belt > Race but the difference is probably less than a half second for each step. In IPSC 1s is a lifetime, in IDPA it's not as big a factor.
