I found a pretty decent Izhevsk SKS on the net. 54 model with a laminated stock which tells me that it was part of the refurb. Is there anything special about this factory vs tula. I have read that they only produced for 2 years.

Well i bought it but I was mistaken the tula I was looking close at was the 54, the Izzy is a 53, I thought it was the other way around. There were 12 tulas one Izzy, I did like the stocks on a couple of the lam and solid tulas better but the izzy was the only one and I had to buy it.

How much $ ? And where ae the pics!!

I paid a little high, at $250, but I got to be up close and look at them. Had a busy day yesterday, and last night. I will take some pics hopefuly tonight. Looking it over last night, I think that the stock might come off and get refinished this spring. It don't look as bad as I thought when I got to realy look.

I wouldn't suggest refinishing the stock, even if the laminate is flaking. As a collector piece its worth more in original condition, even if original condition isn't perfect.

I watch a lot of Pawn Stars, what can I say. hahaha

Sad, but true. Once Bubba starts, it's over. Just get another stock and keep the original when you sell it.

I am happy to shoot it with the stock as is. I just looked close and saw some decent wood grain in it that I thought I could bring out. A couple of the other ones were alot better looking right off the rack. But I had to look past that and buy the Izzy. Thanks for the heads up, I will leave it as is. I do feel like a kid with a new toy though, so I just ordered another one from Tradex. I will also be buying a chinese military from Canada Ammo, and that's it,,,,,,,,,,, maybe.

Or take it to Rick Dale for restoration, hell you might even get some camera time on American Restoration haha.

They're about as collectable as banana stickers. Refinish the stock as you please. It will not decrease the value of your sks. It may even increase the value ;)

Yeah, here's a guy in the know

I've read that htere are upwards of 200 to 2000 Tulas for every Izhevsk. Not year for year, but total. I'd say that makes them collectible. If it has a laminate stock, its refurbed. Pics will help. There seems to be many more 54 Izhevsks than 53s.

Uncommon doesn't necessarily mean they're 'collectable' like cars, stamps or coins are collectable. More like river stones or fossils - to each their own.

Refinishing the stock is not going to diminish the value or harm the original integrity of the rifle what with the magazines being pinned the way they are. Supposedly, the ones with the pin welded to the follower are more desirable than the ones with the rivet? Who decided that destroying the temper in the follower arm is more desirable than the rivet or the frankenweld?

They do hold their value for what they are, and are actually undervalued in that regard.

Irreversibly altered mags is an issue. No apologies if some/lots of us don't buy into the notion of collectability, or diminished collectability just because the stock's been refinished.

I think I will leave it as is for now. There is something about the crudeness, of the finish that is starting to grow on me. When dumb dumb here figures out how to post the pics I took, I'll put them up. Rare,, probably not, but is was different from the rest, and after buying it the guy at the store was telling me that they see about one Izzy for every 15 to 20 tulas. He also said that the sks will become less available, because the US is buying them up like crazy, and they sell for a higher price down there.

I was told the stock of Russian SKS's are almost gone. So if you're looking to get one in the grease, don't wait. 10yrs from now which one will sell easier for more money? These are not high end collectible rifles, but granted will be a valued a lot more than Chinese SKS's because of limited amount.
I've seen where $99 unissued Polish M44's now get $350 in the market today and sell immediately.

I am sure that because mine is an Izzy it will be very rare and colectable. I also think that the value will go up after I run about 5000 rnds thru, and cut down a few trees at my farm. On another thread where I asked a question about laminated stocks, I was told the izzy with a lam stock will play the russian anthum. That will indeed bring the value up a bit more.

The US has not been able to import them since the early 90s by Presidential Order. So your guy is full of it!

Well it wouldn't be the first story, I heard while buying something. That would be a good reason for the price to be higher there.

The '53 Izzy is the second most collectable Russian SKS after the '49 Tula with 90 degree gas tube and spiked bayo. You would be blown away to see what collectors pay for these two models in the US when they are offered for sale in original, all matching condition - $700+ for the Izzy and $1,000+ for the '49 Tula. Don't believe me? Go to SKS Survivor and read the posts there or check out Gunbroker. Whatever you do, do not bubba a '53 Izzy even if it has a laminate replacement stock. When the well runs dry in a few years and bubba is done Tacticooling these rifles and shooting the barrels out with corrosive ammo the prices will go up, and fast. They used to sell Garands and K98's by the bucket full back in the day to...
