I'm seriously underwhelmed with the lack of inspiration and innovation shown by Russian firearms manufacturers. The best they can come up with for a new firearm in the 21st century is a bullpup rehash of the Dragunov?
Did they even designe one semi or auto rifle since 1947 that did not have the stupid ak safety lever?
Not true. Work on an intermediate cartridge and "assault" firearm was started well before the Second World War in Soviet Russia. It wasn't fully developed until the late 40s because the war effort demanded resources in more important fields and delayed R&D.The ak was barely designed at that. The rifle and cartridge were born from the german STG44.
